Hello, so our film just got a 3.22, which is lower than the pilot which, has a 3.35. What is the standard for a flash animation and what is needed for it to reach like a 3.5 or more on newgrounds. I want some constructive criticism btw. I understand it is not 2009 anymore.

Also if possible provide some reference videos.

there is no standard for any kind of movie in Newgrounds, people just voted lower on your new movie because they didn't liked it more than your pilot

Roses are red... Violets are blue... I'm working on Flappy Parrot too...

Hmm yeah I think so, I think it's more of the comedy then animation probably. I just focus on animation alot.

No sorry what I meant was what is a good score. Like 3/5?

People have differing opinions on when a score is high enough to be "good". By my own standards it's around 3.20~3.50 and up

I rate 2.5 if it's unremarkable. Below that if I'm unimpressed or I hate it. 3 has redeeming factors but is still seriously flawed. 3.5 for better execution, but still lacking in impact. 4 is great, but is held back by its limitations and doesn't reach its full potential. 5 means it's outstanding, and something that other animations should strive for, being exemplary.

There isn't really one but I'd say it's having higher than 2.5 since that means your movie is better than the halfway score. From what I've seen in the portal, 3.0-3.5 is classified as a great score and anything above is awesome score. Very few films ever have 5 whole stars so just having a better than average movie should be good enough. Of course, users who've been here longer are more likely to get higher scores due to higher familiarity and popularity so just keep that in mind when comparing yourself to others.

Alright thanks, this has been the most helpful then just people's perspective which I still view as helpful. But I was also hoping for some criticism in my film as well in this forum.

The technical standard for doing really well is very high, the standard for getting lowish scores but positive feedback is lower if you can be funny or interesting.

I think the pilot was funnier and more visually interesting, although I might have liked the next one more if I could properly understand the audio...

With scores there's probably an element of luck because it depends who's voting at the time and having a following also helps.

Also if you want reference videos just go to movies and sort by new.

I feel that people overuse 5*, a 4* isn't bad, +4* rating is in fact very great.

Man, I think you're doing great! With time and self improvement you will reach your so much desired +4* rating, just don't give up and keep trying!

Thanks man, me and my brother appreciate it.

Back in my day if something was less than 10 seconds it would be BLAMMED on the spot, even if it was a very good animation. Nowadays on Newgrounds people's standards vary, but they are much lower than 20 years ago.

I also went ahead and watched both of your videos. Solid effort, but there is room for you to improve. I would do more research on animation itself, and maybe improve your knowledge on using Flash. There's 100s of tutorials on YouTube which should assist you.

If you're interested, here's a guide on how to create industry-grade animations, like the ones you see on TV. A bit outdated, but you don't have to follow every step should you choose not to.

Good luck.

Thanks man, I'll look into it. Especially from the pilot, we had actual hope that the short had a bigger score due to the animation improving. But I'll look into it

It could also be that different people use NG on different days, and while people's standards were lower when you uploaded the pilot, on the different day it was slightly higher. There's also some people who like to zero-bomb (probably for their own amusement). Personally. I try to be fair and I almost always vote above 4, unless it's a horrible submission.

Anyways, act accordingly and you'll get better. Hope to see your works on the frontpage soon!

My animation style is based off squidbillies, it's one of my main inspirations so you could say it's "TV" quality. But naw i'm just playing. Anyways i'm playing with my rigs and making new assets hoping to have some good animation. I've been watching NuMates as it looks simular to pony for inspiration.

Squidbillies is a classic. Sadly I never got around to watching it back when I lived in Minnesota and it used to be on TV almost every day. Unrelated but might as well put it out there. I expected your work to be inspired by Egoraptor, that was my guess.

NuMates I believe was based off HotDiggedyDemon's old style. I could be wrong, but I've noticed many similarities between each works.

I've never watched Egoraptor like ever. I know he's on GameGrumps which is basically the unfunny version of OneyPlays. But yeah that and Oz.Mo, but especially squidbillies. I even follow the same for of animation but moving the rigs before animating.

I wouldn't say there is a standard for newgrounds, people prob voted you lower than a 3.5 for various reasons, dont take the stars to heart and just keep on animating :3
