Hey I am a old timer getting back in the game. The last animation software I used was Flash CS6. I am going to be working on a project that needs to use live action elements and I was curious what everyone is using these days?

At work I tried Adobe Animate but it just crashes non-stop. Its abysmal....

For me, I use Adobe Animate CC. I used to use Moho back when it known as Anime Studio and based on my own experience, Animate is superior but that was nearly 10 years ago but despite my Moho experience wasn’t the best, they’ve been many great shows made using Moho.

If Animate crashes for you, it maybe because your PC isn’t compatible with Animate. For the live action part, I use Premiere Pro so I can mix the live action elements with the animated ones but what I would recommend is using a green (or blue) background for the animated parts so you can use a chroma key to make the background transparent.

I use Flash MX for my work (which i still haven't posted anything animation related here), and I think it does a pretty good job on what it does and it's surprisingly stable on my pc.

OpenToonz is good, like a free version of Adobe Animate. It is used by a big studio, Studio Ghibli. Although, it is known to crash a lot on some hardware.

I'd say Toon Boon Harmony, but considering what they were doing to it lately, I'm not certain you'll accept my choice.

I don't really use Adobe. We tried it once in class back in 2023, but my professor pretty much ignored it. I usually use Aseprite for animation and art... It's mostly for pixel art, but it's a really nice program. You can even customize it and add extensions to it, which is great.

Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Yosos Pumpkin, and I do pixel art.

I'm a screw-up. So I use RoughAnimation, which is the one I recommend most for mobile animations for those who are tired of Flipaclip.

I use Krita. Open source and great for traditional animation, but has very limited vector capabilities. Has never crashed on me in the 10 years I've used it. I use Davinci Resolve to compile.

(F)=Free (P)=one time purchase (S)=Subscription

For 2d animation I also know people who use:

Clip studio-(S/P), TV paint-(P), OpenToonz-(F), Toon Boom-(S/P), and Blender-(F)

Not sure if I can help with that, I'm still on Macromedia Flash 4...

Toon Boom isn't a (S/P) anymore, but rather just (S).

your not old for using CS6. Animate probably have specific requirement your missing from your "work" machine ?

Industry wise there is something called TV ????. Toonboom is another one, usually can compile as flash, as that is it's core.

TV paint animate is another. You could also animate within photoshop. A couple of others. But again if you can do in flash it makes no difference

Hi, I’ve never animated before in my life and I’ve always wanted to dip my toes in the water. I’m not unrealistic in my expectations, I know it takes time and I can’t expect a masterpiece on the first try. In terms of hardware, I only own an old iPad, so in terms of software I’m probably looking at Toon Squid. I’d love to hear your thoughts, advice or suggested beginners exercises!

I use Pivot Animator, it's a stick figure program but now you could design your stick figures to look better and how better they get depends on how better you design them, all my animations and comics are made in pivot animator

RoughAnimator. Available for mobile and PC. It's inexpensive and inexpensive. It works well for most things. It's good for beginners who want to work with more complex programs.
