Jungle/Drum&Bass, where to start? 2025-11-25 00:21:25

I’ve been listening to some drum and bass recently (more specifically Jungle) but I don’t really know much about it. Are there artists I should know of? Where can I find them? Are there popular or essential songs I should listen to? Please fill me in!

Alright first things first, jungle is not a subgenre of drum & bass but rather a precursor to it, in a similar way that ska isn't a subgenre of reggae because it actually came first.

Some artists you can check out off the top of my head: Shy FX ("Original Nuttah" with UK Apache is considered a foundational track, Dead Dred ("Dred Bass" is an excellent example), Congo Natty, Tom & Jerry, Aphrodite and maybe some 4hero tracks.

There also newer jungle releases by the likes of Amen Andrews (one of Luke Vibert's many aliases), Msymiakos, Arcane and some tracks by Andy Jenkinson aka Ceephax Acid Crew (best example would be from his soundtrack to "Essex Spacebin" and especially the track "Dimensional Bass"

I'd recommend Richard D james (1996). I'd also recommend Feed Me Weird Things (haven't listened to the latter but it's nice from what I listened)

Couple of personal favorites of mine:

Technical Itch - The Hand (Dungeon Master Mix)

Total Science - Monkey See Monkey Do (Baron Remix)

Calyx - Catapult

Omni Trio - Renegade Snares

It may be obvious, but my taste in jungle/DnB comes almost entirely from GTA 3, lmao.
