How to have a clear singing voice?

Never thought I'd even ask a question like this in the forums, but I've now started gravitating towards making music with vocals & lyrics. And since I don't want to mess up this next track I'm doing, what are good ways to have your voice be clear of any obstructions such as phlegm and whatnot? I already know to avoid sugar for sure, but what's some things you personally do?

Any help is sorely appreciated. :)

DONOTANDIMEANDONOT force your voice into the back of your throat. i used to do that to make my voice sound deep and its the reason im still in a nonvarsity choir at my school. do not do that. sing forward.

Seriously, this one small change has drastically improved my pitch and clarity. Thank you! Haha!

I'm not a trained singer by any means, but I know several and have worked with them. I sing sometimes for my own projects. Here's some generally good tips for recording vocals I've learned:

  • Avoid dairy products before singing. It can linger in your throat and change the way it feels to sing.
  • If it strains your voice, don't do it. There's probably a different technique out there for better results.
  • Make sure your space is quiet while recording. That will make any issues more obvious and correctable.
  • Don't be afraid to be loud. Dynamics can be controlled with software, timbre and intricacy are much harder to do in post.
  • Warm up.
  • Have water on hand.
  • Get a lot of takes. More options makes things easier.
  • Edit out any mouth sounds you don't like in between words, syllables, or phrases.
  • Sing close to the mic, on axis, and dial your levels appropriately.
  • Use a pop filter to dampen plosives.
  • Make sure your space is as dry as possible acoustically. Any room reverberations will be exacerbated by compression.
  • EQ out any unnecessary low frequencies; sometimes that will be enough to catch specific unwanted details, and it has the bonus of solving most ambient room noise issues (from things like HVAC systems).

Hope this helps! I know some of this is beyond mouth noises and phlegm but I think it's useful nonetheless.

Thanks for listening! :)

I don't love giving expensive advice, but when it comes to vocals, I've had multiple epiphanies from just a few sessions with a voice coach. There are so many ways to sing in an unsustainable, damaging way, and unless someone knows exactly how you're doing it wrong, it's difficult to explain how to adjust or know that you've adjusted correctly. I've heard "sing from the diaphragm" a million times, but it only clicked for me after having someone that actually knows what that means and could help me with stuff like my posture and which muscles to use.

I think you can improve little by little with general advice, but at some point you run out of stuff to learn purely through trial and error.
