Howdy folks!

I am working on a game with Moe The Programmer that will be posted here on Newgrounds hopefully some time in the Spring or Summer time, but for now, we're looking for people to voice literal bears hibernating in caves. What's the game called?

Poke The Bear! :D

My budget is $100 CAD per successful audition, which should be plenty for making deep voice roars in the sound booth for about an hour. haha

As bears are big and scary no matter the gender, this role is open to anyone that thinks they can match the reference videos down below with nice clean audio. If we find what we're looking for early on, I'll simply close this thread or just message everyone else that auditions that we found what we were looking for and that we'll be in touch for future projects. :)

The plot of the game is that it's set in a world not too unlike our own, except a very risky and dangerous game called 'Poke The Bear' has become regrettably popular. People far and wide will sneak into bear dens during Winter, and then try to poke a hibernating bear with a tree branch as many times as possible 'without' waking it up, and then leave. When the bear does wake up, they will, of course, cartoonishly maul the den invader and send them to the hospital, where they will fully heal, not learn their lesson at all, and try again the next weekend.

All graphics you see are temporary, because we've been trying to get all the highscores and animation working properly in the code before upgrading the art to it's final version. Very much a rough copy.

For the mockup, we've also been using temporary sound and music assets. Now that behind the scenes some of our newer less stable prototypes are making good headway on solving glitches and animation coding issues, we're starting to swap out the temporary assets with brand new purpose made ones.

For the bear, I've been using sound clips from the enemies from Sly Cooper 1, and obviously that won't fly long term, so I need to get that replaced. :P

So that's where you come in!

I need someone/ some people to voice a literal bear as it jostles around after being jabbed in the face with a tree branch just before it falls back asleep. When the bear is still sleepy, it'll have a deep voiced human voice actor since that's funnier, but when the bear is woken up and it's about to send the player character to the hospital, it'll be using real life bear noises since those are more terrifying. lol

The character found in the link below on Youtube has a voice that I think would be great for the many bears found

in the game. Deep, guttural, and slightly echo-y. If you can make your voice sound similar, awesome! I'd love to hear from ya. :)

Serguei from RRR has the exact kind of monster voice similar to what I'm after for the bears in the caves.

Then for full context, what I'd been using up to this point.

The Sounds Effects from Sly Cooper 1 I'd been using temporarily for the bear thus far. 7:43 - 8:22

=============================================

Does this all sound interesting to you?

Then feel free to send me your monster voice demo reel, or record an audition based on the loose script found below and send it to me here on Newgrounds @ Syrupmasterz. :)

If you're selected after your demo reel is received, you'll get a message from me telling you you're hired, we'll figure out how to get the payment to ya and we'll get all the lines we need via Newgrounds or Discord depending. If the demo reel is so perfect that I can simply just integrate it into the game directly with Moe The Programmer's help, then I'd send the payment after getting permission before I'd do something like that.

We're hoping to have something done and posted here on NG during the Springtime, so we'd enjoy having the auditions open for about a month (from now until Late February) before we go looking around other places if we can't find someone.

Auditions in case you don't have a demo reel tailored for monster noises and roars

Character: A large hibernating bear that doesn't like being woken up.

Backstory: You are a bear living a peaceful life in the forest. Unfortunately, in recent years, people have been wandering into your cave during Winter to wake you up for reasons you can't quite understand, and then run away. So you've made a point of making sure that the people that invade your den and wake you up are brutalized by your claws, but live to warn others of their kind that your slumbers aren't to be disturbed.

Motivation: It's freezing outside, but your bear den is thankfully pretty comfortable inside. Hibernation is going well and you're enjoying a peaceful slumber...but every now and then you feel like something is poking your face and you wake up ever so slightly. Confused, and irritated, you jostle, but then you yawn and calmly fall back asleep. Except when you wake up and see some punk. Then you're furious and gotta send the den invading fool to the hospital with your claws and teeth. You know, standard Cave Bear procedure.

Reference / Inspiration:

Serguei from Rayman Raving Rabbids Voice Lines

(An assortment like this without blatantly knocking them off with your own creative spin would be wonderful)

Lines (if you could call them that, haha)

----------------------------------------------------------

-Guttural yawns

-Horrifying Grunts you'd make before falling back to sleep

-Heavy, intimidating snoring

-Deep voiced noises of confusion

-Monstrous sleepy mumbling

-Deep voiced noises you'd make if you heard a sound from far away and were confused as to what it was

-Frightening noises as you squint at someone sleepily, before falling back to hibernation.

-Peaceful sleeping noises of a giant, violent bear.

-"Huhhh?"

-Noises you'd make if you were a large beast rubbing your eyes before falling asleep again.

-You have been woken up, and you're staring at some mortified sap holding a tree branch. You grunt loudly before an actual real life bear roar from real life plays afterwards.

-Diabolical snarl

-Sounds you'd make if you swiped at something with a sharp claw

Not bad, not bad. :)

Screams definitely sound like they come from a warrior or a zombie from a game where the player character keeps hitting them with a cartoony sword, so when I pitched it down in Audacity, it sounded more monstrous, but of course it still sounds very humanoid. 'Sleepy but Angry Bear' is a genre of voice acting I don't suspect people to have on hand. haha

Another thing I noticed was some mild audio clipping. Your program stopped it from peak'ing and making a painful frequency, but I can see where frequencies flatline. Tricks like pop filters, socks in front of the microphone and pillows near the mic do wonders for mitigating issues even if the audio is otherwise crispy thanks to background noise removal and other similar adjustments.

You're welcome to try and whip something up specifically for this audition if you want too!

I've added you to the Audition folder, and will let you know down the road if you're selected. :)

Eyyy, very nice!

Quite close to what I'm after. In Audacity I lowered the pitch to a few of the noises and it sounded quite bear-like, and also close to Serguei's lines from the reference video I had in the main post.

Slow and deliberate yawns, which makes sense, but you'd be allowed to get more silly and cartoonish with it as long as you could keep your voice grumbly at the same time. haha

Similar issue to the other audition, with your screams, your audio peaked. So while your program prevented a painful frequency from getting in, the wavelength flatlines. There's ways to get good solid yelling and avoid causing the mic filament from wibbling and wobbling so much it peaks the audio, but we'd get that sorted when it's time for final audio if you're selected.

Speakin' of, you've been added to the audition folder, and can try again if/whenever you'd like. :)
