Newgrounds = Edgy... Or Does It? 2025-11-17 16:39:54

People online are quick to call any violent and/or edgy animation "Newgrounds", but even in the earlier days of the website, violent animations weren't the only kind of media you could find on here. E.G. LegendaryFrog

Even less so now.


Like what I typed in my thread about the term "Newgrounds style" I feel like this is caused by younger people just parroting a surface level term they've seen/heard about. Most of them probably haven't even visited Newgrounds before.

Yeah you're right. But then again we got shit like Pico's School, but also every site has something like that in some form. Twitter has a degenerate caveman fuckboi AI, Reddit is Reddit, Bluesky has really edgy users and Discord has roleplay Servers.

Well, Newgrounds hosted most of the internet's most disturbing and edgy content, and the creator of Newgrounds hosted his games and movies that were also VERY Edgy and violent. So of course, Newgrounds is going to be known as edgy. But don't look at the edgy side of things, look at the fact people were free to make anything by anyone!

I'm not so sure if it's a NG specific thing. It's more of a generational thing, where in the 2000's, children's cartoons in violent or horror settings was a way of saying "FUCK BARNEY, WE'RE GROWN UPS NOW", especially in the early days of Web 2.0. Now, the new generation has had unlimited access to all sorts of things since the very beginning and fandoms have developed as opposed to "hate clubs". It was quite a big cultural shift if you think about it. Instead of seeing "FUCK BARNEY, WE'RE GROWN UPS NOW" peoople, it is more likely you'll see "I'M 25 AND I STILL WATCH BARNEY" communities.

NG definitely was no stranger to such content in the past but it wasn't left behind when times and standards have changed. Saying NG is "Kill Barney" type content is like saying art is just impressionism. Crude, naughty, violent content is indeed what helped build this site 2 decades ago, but don't let it be its only defining feature

Considering I was banned recently for saying ""the f slur"" as a joke, which wasn't poorly received either except by moderation, apparently, I simply made the grave offense of saying a no-no word, no this website is not exactly "edgy" anymore.

Nah, when I hear "Newgrounds-Style" what comes to mind is flash-animated videos with linework that is think and/or slightly wobbly. Examples are EddsWorld: Zombeh Attack, and various BlockHead episodes.


Henry Stickmin and FancyPants Adventures have that style of animation, yet don't have the same content from T and M rated video games.


Of people are saying: "All edgy content is Newgrounds" as the Newgrounds-style, that's like calling South Park, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, The Boondocks, Grand Theft Auto, Game Of Thrones, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Sabrina Carpenter, Snoop Dog, and Scott Pilgrim as the "Newgrounds-style" as well. Even mainstream media has edgy content.


Also, my definition of "edgy" is aestetics, or anything that looks dark and cool; Hot-Topic and Spencer's merchandise.

Given that Newgrounds has almost no limits, aside from hate, paedophilic and ai content, it means that artists can really put every human essence into a piece.

It's more of the general culture on taboo subjects that's what sets this platform unique. Even with the most "edgiest" pieces elsewhere, Newgrounds still has a sense that it is human made with flaws and all.

I like to think that Newgrounds feels more... Human,

It has everything, a soft spot and a hard spot. The cute and the edgy.

While other social media apps dont allow it that much, or censor it under "hateful content". The best way I can put it is basicaly, Newgrounds is the only website to me that feels human, while other websites like bluesky for example dont feel human, they feel artificial in a sense.

i think this site lost its "edginess" a long time ago, i think even before i hopped aboard.


now i think the site is the last thing i'd probably see being all edgy and stuff by the way i and others are treated here and so. because of how other social media sites become even more toxic and edgy.


maybe its because the people in here grew and change as people instead of sticking to their toxic and ill mannered attitude? hell if i know.


this site still has that unfiltered vibe to it, like if there's less guard rails when it comes to artistic creativity, despite the ones trying to make it otherwise, maybe the site lost its edge because being all grungy and edgy is just not it anymore, and what's it is tame by comparison.

If this was Newgrounds 2000s or early 2010s then sure it was Edgy, but now it's a bit more sanitize. This site has been around for so long that you'll eventually have different generations on this site. You can still find edgy and violent content on this site though a few contents got remove for extreme reasons. I would still like Newgrounds to keep some edginess including other things. Keep the site have a diverse taste rather than one taste or genre.

There is alot of cute and decent work in the animation shorts on Newgrounds. Even award winning ones, like not just

a NG award. But short films that is beyond the edgy or the violent kind. But that has soul in it and honestly. People forget

often that Newgrounds is more about freedom of making anything that come to mind. It's just the less good is more brough

up than the rest. Cuz it's way way easy to point out the negatives, than the positives more.

Like what I typed in my thread about the term "Newgrounds style" I feel like this is caused by younger people just parroting a surface level term they've seen/heard about. Most of them probably haven't even visited Newgrounds before.


This sort of** reminds me of 4chan. Most people who've heard of the site automatically think it's a schizophrenic shitfest of nazis. From what I've heard though, it's more like a salad bowl, with each board having their own cultures. So co users would be distinct from lgbt users, who would be distinct from mu users, so on. Of course there's overlap, but the point is they're generally unique.


But I say sort of though, as 4chan still has boards which are edgy schizophrenic shitfests filled with nazis [cough cough pol cough,] but theres some spaces which are exceptions [like the aforementioned co and lgbt.] But it's its reputation in the 2000s for being edgy and the influence boards like pol or r9k have had on mass shootings and American politics that gave the site that reputation.

This site is as edgy as 4chan is /b/. Which is to say, a surface level impression that people got a long time ago that just stuck around.


In like ten years or something you might find more people know newgrounds as the "friday night funkin site" or something instead.

If anything Bluesky, much like X has rabbit holes of a bunch of idiots divulging in surface level politics, save for a very few number of people.

I say that having been using the platform observing what goes on.

One side tries to convince you that The Pride Community is full of a bunch of pedos & groomers for the actions of a few, and the other side tries to convince you that The Religious Community is full of a bunch of pedos & groomers for the actions of a few. It's more than that of course, but that is how it basically feels for me. True unity comes from true individuality, not from the mindset of a single man. It's why whenever people ask me where I am on the political compass, the answer is, albeit jokingly, "As far away as possible."


There's a reason why I don't consider politics in of itself edgy because a lot of it is just the same old shit about how people should be going about their lives and shoehorning their beliefs onto other people when that isn't even how politics is supposed to work.


If anything the only edgy things you might get out of it are people willing to commit mass murder over their political beliefs these days but that's about it.

I just don't give a shit what people do with their own lives and bodies. Don't force your beliefs on me, respect my consent as I do yours, and we're good. No need to overcomplicate this stuff. Equality, economy, and ecology; those are the three things I care about in regards to politics.
