Art Portal Update
On Monday we introduced multi-image and multi-author to the Art Portal, with a bunch of other improvements. There are still bugs getting sorted out, read the post for all the details!
Live Action Jam
Over the summer @BrandyBuizel hosted a Live Action Jam here on NG, with entries now listed in the Live Action Jam collection.
Winners have been determined, here are the results!
via @BrandyBuizel
Just to recap: the only requirement is that you use some live action element in your movie submission. You can base your entire submissions around this or it can be a small piece complimenting other animated elements (it's still newgrounds and so it's gotta be animated). You can even include live action into a project you're currently working on and submit it to this jam!
Our judges panel consisted of @BrandyBuizel @JamesLee @MaxJohnsonINK @AlmightyHans @InputUnknown @tanimayto @MalcolmSith and @IvanAlmighty
First of all we wanted to shoutout a few entries for excellent compositing, unique visuals, and the qualities that we enjoyed across all entries, but were just shy of making the final cut.
Honorable Mentions
We should also shout out @ZabuJard for submitting a ludicrous 20 ENTRIES all on their own!
Here are your winners!
5th Place - $40
I couldn’t help myself, I had to reward a very close 5th place entry by @Eugine1a2b for presenting some of the slickest, butteriest lego stop-motion on the entire website. The pacing gets held back a little by the live footage inserts away from the lego set, but only because we so badly wanted the stopmo to keep going forever!
4th Place - $60
@fileto’s art direction on “ENSCONCED ISSUE” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the jam using a myriad of techniques and clever ways to incorporate real elements like the newspaper textures, the seams between animation and real footage transitions, and my god the bit with the notepad accordion-staircase blew my mind.
3rd Place - $165
@thecooldrawingguy came out with an empathetic piece for all the lactose-intolerant folks out there. The Dust Pixies is a well animated 2D series we’re honored to have influenced an episode of; they know exactly what they’re doing and the execution is fluid and fun. Speaking of fluids, love the live action segments with actual milk and the tiny puppets of the main characters are very reminiscent of the credits bits at the end of Chowder episodes.
2nd Place - $300
@PukeBomb team assembled a 15-minute collage for the senses. This absurd comedy had us laughing our asses off for the full runtime and it really deserves recognition for their contribution to the live action jam. Mixed media, great performances, and a plot that keeps us engaged, this entry nearly made the top spot on most of our lists.
1st Place - $400
The winner of the Live Action Jam is @DeadlyComics and their submission “EASY BAKE”
It starts out looking like a slow burn analog horror as Orlando the charming… alligator? tries a bunch of different puns and jokes around an easy bake oven they wheeled out onto set. If that kind of weak improv stuff turns you away as a viewer, just keep watching, the ending is what makes the entire short so good.
One final note, I host these contests in order to get others creating new content for the site and I use the themes to influence creators to make more of what I personally want to see getting posted. It’s not limited to just me, anyone can host a contest or a jam on newgrounds: just have an idea, do a little planning, offer a prize of some kind(money is a decent incentive). Reach out to Tom if you have a good idea and want to follow through.
