Expect a lot of news posts this month, as I’ll be announcing recipients of our Annual Drawing Tablet Giveaway while also highlighting cool things that happened on NG this year!

Drawing Tablet 12 - UnsolvedCases

Today’s tablet recipient is @UnsolvedCases! You may know them for their brilliant Nightmare Cops fan art.

With this tablet, UnsolvedCases intends to propel their art to the next level, as well as have their own tablet to bring to university in the near future.

2023 Highlight - FuturecopLGF’s Favorite Games

I’ve recently been chatting with @GeoKureli, @Glaiel-Gamer, @Dungeonation and @FuturecopLGF about the potential of having a Game Awards on NG. As part of the process, we’ve started with a list of the top ~250 games of 2023.

@FuturecopLGF, known for his monthly videos where he plays every game on NG, has already gone through making note of his personal favorites. I’m using his “gold medal” list for today’s post!

Fans of Meat Boy will love this retro action-platformer with a heavy emphasis on control and movement. Gappy's Playground won first place for Pixel Day and placed third in the Best of January.

Picayune Dreams will challenge your skill, endurance, and perseverance through a mind warping, psychedelic, bullet hell nightmare! If you enjoy this demo, you will definitely want to pick up Picayune Dreams on Steam.

Replay and reestablish your connection to the world of Tricky Keys in this old-school puzzle platforming adventure! Trickey Keys 2 took first place in our Best of February.

In this mixture of auto battler and strategy game, become a necromancer and try to overthrow the King! Auto Necrochess took first place in our Best of March.

Genokids is a game about MOTIVATION, a fast-paced hack & slash where a band of four musicians take down an alien invasion. This game was kinda slept on and took 13th in the Best of April, while meanwhile being #1 on Futurecop's April list.

Take on the robot hordes of Rushdown Rivals from a different perspective! Fight through the city streets in this hectic arcade shooter inspired by Time Crisis and House of the Dead! Rushdown Rivals Reloaded won first place in both the Best of May and Pico Day

Pico's School meets Cuphead style combat in this tough-as-nails Boss Battle Frenzy featuring the classic Pico's School characters revamped in a brand new package! Pico's Boss Run won second place for Pico Day and fourth place for the Best of May.

Underboard: Omen is a roguelike autobattler about people appearing in a dangerous place. It took 7th in the Best of May and was #2 on Futurecop’s May list.

Train Journey is a 16-cartridge PICO-8 game (the maximum size) about a mysterious train to which the player is seemingly bound. Travel between stops, meet unique characters, and learn their stories. Can you free yourself and return home? Or will you ride the train forever...?

This is Chapter 1 out of 5 of The Mysterious Cat Tower, a turn-based RPG set in a small Brazillian city that is on the verge of collapsing after an ominous tower appears beside it overnight. The Mysterious Cat Tower won third place in the Best of June.

Demons from the collective subconscious are leaking into reality. Save the world from the curse of the Jabberwock in this wacky dice building twin stick action roguelite! If you enjoy this demo, wishlist GIMMIKO on Steam! This demo won first place in the Best of July.

Kalikan is a vertically scrolling bullet hell 'shmup inspired by Dodonpachi, pushing the limits of Pico-8 ~virtual~ hardware. This took 12th in the Best of August and third on FutureCop’s August list. Stop sleeping on this one, especially if you love vertical shoot ‘em ups!

Paper Planet is a doodly, planet-defender, bullet hell roguelike with Flash-inspired visuals. If you enjoy this demo, buy Paper Planet on Steam! This placed 17th in the Best of August and forth on FutureCop’s list for the month. It also had an art contest!

Acro-bot is a 2d action-platformer with a focus on cool movement and simple visuals. It was made for Robot Day and placed second on FutureCop’s August list.

Get the cup of immortality and escape the temple with all the treasures you can find! Paraiso was first place on FutureCop’s August list.

Lost For Swords is a Roguelike Deckbuilder, where the cards in your deck shape the rooms of the dungeon you’re exploring. It took fifth place in our Best of September

Slice and shoot your way through your first (and only) day of employment at the A.A.H.W., in this first-person Madness Day game! Madness: Fueled By Hotdogs took sixth place in the Best of September

Can Hank defeat Tricky and AAHW agents while being half the man he once was? Madness SEVERED was created for Madness Day and placed seventh in the Best of September.

Jump King with an SMW core, taking heavy influence from hacks, with 32 screens of tightly packed high-stakes precision platforming. PINFALL ranked 11th in the Best of September and second on Futurecop’s September list.

Use your flashlight to reveal the ghosts that hide in the shadows. Bleek won first place in both our Halloween Spooktacular and the Best of October.

Drift on your bike to ignite flames and destroy monsters. This unique and stylish game ranked first on Futurecop’s October list.

You find yourself hopelessly lost in a very dense, mysterious fog at sea. This one by @Ferociter was a bit lost in the fog of October, take time to explore it now!

That concludes the list for today! There were many other great games in 2023 that are due to be revisited, so I’m already planning a second games showcase post.

If you want one more game today, though, The Time I Was Stranded in Some Planet left an impression on me.

It's been a heck of a trip going down memory lane and replaying all of the games of the year: fun to revisit a lot of previous favorites, and also slap myself for missing or underrating some real gems! It's tough to try and rank the games but I'm doing my best: there's so many interesting games that I'd loved to shout out but might be too niche for best of the year, and it's so easy to fall into traps like how 'big' games with lots of content can overshadow incredibly memorable short/small games. Hope everyone looks forward to the results!

Here's some more cool games that I've been replaying and pondering on recently:

Just one thing to note: One of the tablet sponsors, "RaverNG" changed their username. Clicking the given username leads to an error.

- Cara S, red lady who takes "Everything by Everyone" too literally.

- she/her (and they maybe)🏳️‍⚧️

I was being polite about that. No need to nitpick :/

Will update in today's post! Should probably go back through those too.
