If you visited NG in the past ~10 hours and were greeted by a flashy screen doing a security check followed by “Access Granted”, that was our new Shield Mode. This is replacing the previous Under Attack Mode (UAM), which required everyone to perform a captcha whenever NG was under attack. With Shield Mode, the majority of people should never have to do a captcha.
On September 4th NG was hit by the largest DDoS attack in our history and we’ve been experiencing frequent smaller attacks ever since. This means we’ve had UAM on a lot, making people perform a captcha, which wasn’t ideal.
To add to this turbulent time, it looks like Shield Mode was blocking payment processor responses when someone purchased Supporter - whoops! We will be sorting out these purchases so hold tight. New Supporters shouldn't hit this snag moving forward and you shouldn't see Shield Mode more than once per day after testing is complete.
We’ve had an uptick in new Supporters because we are now requiring Supporter status to perform age verification in the UK, per the UK Online Safety Act. Each verification costs money, hence the Supporter requirement. This process has overall been going smoothly, other than the snag with blocked payment responses. Thank you everyone who has gone through this process so far, your support and patience is much appreciated!
