Closing Thoughts

October was our annual Halloween Spooktacular! Thank you everyone who got into the spirit and made something spooky for the occasion.

One interesting and polarizing piece of media this month was the Newgrounds Zeen, a throwback to times when there was more “tough love” on NG. I’ll admit I laughed at a lot of it but also felt discomfort about it. While plenty of us have been motivated by harsh critiques, I hope NG can strike a balance between not being mean and not being toxicly-positive.

Internal overhauls continue and the admin page we use to manage the big front page box got updated with some new capabilities.

Other News

Larrynachos is organizing Tankmas 2025 and KingCrowned is organizing Sketch Collab 2025, two big community projects that could use some top talent.

Secret Santa Registration (Art event) will run from November 21st-30th.

There are other events on the Calendar so please give that a look.

Spooktacular winners are up next!

I always thought it looks vectory, I wonder if it was done in illustrator or inkscape.

Congrats to every winner, to everyone who made it far, and to everyone who participated in this NG's funny October.

I'm honestly happy by myself. Even thought Ice Cream Supremacy didn't make it to the top seven, it still stayed inside the Top 10, which is more than enough for me to feel satisfied (it was my bday gift after all). Happy November to everybody :))

I can't actually tell myself. The cover is REALLY polished, but it's hard to say if it was or not with the halftone distorting things a bit.

Man, I'm surprised these two were only runner ups - certainly my movie highlights:

And I don't really get to play as many games as I'd like anymore, so Sleepy Sheepies was a nice change of pace for me:

Oh and btw the Newgrounds Zeen kicked ass, more PLZ - I liked seeing something with more "bite" to it :P

Things are heating up in the run-up to Tankmas, and we're getting a smorgasbord of collabs as a result.

Its a tough balance to strike, that's for sure, but with thirty years under its belt, I feel NG's got a solid grasp of it. Excellent work to everyone who worked on the Newgrounds Zeen - you got some solid chuckles out of me.

Personal Favourite Movie: Tennis Chumps (@ImaSiphy, 1st place)

A classic animation, with plenty of retro-tinged charm.

Personal Favourite Game: School Night Seance - Demo (@Bleak-Creep and 12 others, 1st place)

Fucking fantastic demo from start to finish. I'm hyped for the full game.

Personal Favourite Audio: Pitbull (@Zalay, 2nd place)

You kill it in art and animation, and you'd kill at a rap battle. God Damn.

Personal Favourite Art: BITE OF ‘87! (@HushPuppE, 3rd place)

This is official variant cover material. Fantastically fucking done.

Congrats to the winners and runners-up - you represent the best Newgrounds has to offer, bar fucking none.

Congrats to the winners and all the game devs for delivering a spooky amount of high-quality games! The biggest scare I had was trying to rank all of these absolute bangers: thinking I might've missed a great game gives me paranoia stronger than any ghost or ghoul could!

Glad to see that most of my favorites made it into the top, so no big complaints there (loved the hell out of Helltaker-clone Dungeon Divas which took my 1st place) but if I had to point out one I think got overlooked, it'd be the return of @bokononyossarian game Bleu Bayou from its initial demo back in 2020! It's shaping up to be a great boss-rush like Cuphead.

Feel free to check out the rest of my rankings here. October isn't over for me yet as I've got to go check out the rest of the Halloween entries, so away I go!

I think people get it mixed up on honest critique and being a total cunt about it. If all you can say is "Fuck you, you suck at this and you also suck at life. Stop breathing.", it doesn't have to be exactly as worded. But people tend to use that as a shield to be allowed to be a complete cunt about it. I wasn't here for the wild west newgrounds, but I would imagine that the ratio of internet tough guys vs those just being honest, the honest ones far outnumbered the internet tough guys.

That's just my 0.2 cents as I see it. There's a difference between being actual tough love and just being a wanker. Don't be a wanker. And don't be blindly toxic to positivity, it only encourages those to not try or really face any room for improvements.

Yeah there's a sliding scale here that people misjudge on both sides. People posting unhelpful rude stuff thinking they're just being honest, and people overreacting to reasonable, negative criticism. The ideal is in the middle where people are honest but not needlessly mean, and their critiques are taken as useful feedback rather than attacks.

Fucking fantastic demo from start to finish. I'm hyped for the full game.

Honestly, I would prefer an honest asshole over a fake positive person any day, there's nice and then there's TOO nice. Balance.

Well, I for one consider attacking the individual when giving criticism to be dishonest. Which is what I was primarily talking about. But I get the general gist of what you're saying. Like you said, balance.

Its a tough balance to strike, that's for sure, but with thirty years under its belt, I feel NG's got a solid grasp of it. Excellent work to everyone who worked on the Newgrounds Zeen - you got some solid chuckles out of me.

I'm only saying just because someone's leaving a negative review doesn't preclude them from offering valid criticism - if they just say "fuck you" and that's it then obviously not. But I have to admit that seems rare to me unless the post is in some way politicized, that seems to bring all the miserable bastards out of the woodwork.

You want a taste of the old west then read some of Stamper's reviews sometimes, he could be such a chode LOL love it.

Tom, I'm glad you had some laughs! I hope it wasn't too much discomfort. To put this in perspective, the Zeen was a collab organized and made over a single weekend by a few friends. It wasn't an organized hate piece, it was meant to be a funny thing to read that satirized some Newgrounds culture and people. I was pleasantly surprised by the reception, I am glad most people understood it as that and had a good time.

And look, I fully understand not wanting to go back to Newgrounds more vile days, as there was so truly foul stuff floating about. Sometimes we just gotta laugh at ourselves is all. Just busting some balls over here, New Jersey style.

Great month overall though, even some other great zines like the Art Folk Magazine, which I loved:

Just speaking purely for me, I thought it was glorious. I like things a little caustic from time to time.
