Author Comments

Dorotea is a researcher specializing in the history of her hometown of Conversano, a (real) city near Bari, in Italy.

An important event is just a few days away. Her job involves cataloging and archiving books and artifacts dating back to the 1600s, stored in a room that hasn't been opened for decades.

But the past never stops watching her...

ABOUT MY GAME

Dorotea is a (real) horror game for Game Boy with Game Boy Color support that you can complete in about 10 minutes. The game that you'll play here it's the same ROM packed in a ready-to-use emulator. If you want to play the game on a real Game Boy, you can download the ROMs for free from here.

The game was developed, written, designed, and composed almost entirely by me using the GB Studio engine and IDE with other tools, all in about a couple of weeks

There are only a few tiles and sound effects I borrowed from other authors, listed in the Credits section.

THE THEME

I created this game for the italian Italocurso Game Jam 2025. This year's theme allowed me to create a tribute to my city, something I've wanted to do for many years.

Fortunately, Conversano is a city full of art, history, and legend, having also been a central hub for centuries, both politically and religiously.

For this project, I didn't just want to "take" a specific story, I wanted to combine and mix different elements (real and fantasy) to create a unique tale, strongly inspired by, yet heavily spiced with elements of my own imagination.

For this reason, I should point out that the game is not a reliable historical or topographical document. Many references are purely coincidental.

If you see a hand, it's a photo of my hand re-drawn in Paint.NET (No filters, it was hand painted pixel-by-pixel).

AFTER THE GAME

You want more? Do you have some questions about the story or the lore of game? Are you interested in the historic and legendary references? I wrote a lengthy post on my website.

On this article, you'll find all the references, some behind-the-scenes and what to expect in the future from me.

READ HERE, SPOILERS IN THE LINK!

Мне нравится эта графика с хорошим сюжетом это явно хорошо

Way too much dialogue, especially right at the beginning of the game where she's talking to those people. Just tell me what to do and give me the lore AFTER I've been drawn into the story. Also, I can't get past the part where the little things come out of the graves.

When I saw the art for this game, it looked like RPG Horror Games made with RPG Maker and that's what made me love it and give it a 5 Star.

Wow I have to say for the visuals the art was nice and has that old school gaming style and came off well

~X~

This was a super cool game!
The artstyle is very well made and does an S tier job when it comes to looking like its the Gameboy Color, down to there being barely any sound too. The story line was interesting and i like how you mixed history with it (speaking as a history nerd). I read that blog post in the description too, and it was cool seeing your thought process and the history of the game. Good stuff, hope to see more =)
