From reading people’s messages. I’m very glad to hear that some of you are against this type of use of Generative AI. I know the creator did not have ill intentions when making this cartoon while blatantly using generative Ai throughout, but at the same time, since @TomFulp is letting stuff like this slip through the portal (this video used to be deleted and tom restored it) we should start being more critical about what we rate submissions like @BrandyBuizel said.

Well this is going to become a broader topic of debate for sure but if I'm gonna be real since this goes into the whole deal with the numerous A.I. threads that have been popping up as of late if there is one thing I'm glad about with this one it hasn't been a total shit storm of people just saying "Ai Bad"

TBH I'm not entirely sure how much I agree with Tom's decision at the moment but I suppose that given what has been discussed in this thread so far I do think that this is going to span a few more threads. I'm just glad that something new came out of the discussion regarding the proverbial lines of what is considered acceptable thus far.

About the blam threshold... I'm not sure what's the current one but anything below 2 stars gets the boot, right?

It would be interesting to conduct a little deep research into it, how this would probably affect the portals, what is the expected quality of something with 2 stars and 2.5 stars, etc.

I think I saw this as a joke in a thread once but someone said something about how the 2 star threshold favors low quality stuff staying over decent quality stuff at minimum, and that was because, on top of it not being even, more people vote conservative amounts around 2.5-3 than 2 or below, kind of dragging votes up and allowing stuff to pass judgement easily. Not sure if that's true! But I feel there's definitively some people who vote stuff without playing the stuff for more than 10 seconds.

From my personal observation movies with 3 star tops can be mixed bags, some are genuinely good while others you wonder how it passed judgement lol. 4 to 5 have guaranteed quality and 2.5 to below most of the time is lame stuff

To exemplify why a deeper scientific look into it would be interesting are these two recent animations that just passed judgement:

The stick fight is a short but very interesting frame by frame animation. It's ranked around 2 stars as of now.

The other one is a rigged loop with not much interesting going on. It's ranked close to 3 stars as of now! It's worth mentioning both have around the same amount of views and votes well. Why that is! Is it because of the thumbnail (Assumption that one animations looks more finished than the other)? It would definitively be worth looking more into the matter!

I kinda wish that this thread has a frank look at the application of AI-tools and come to a consensus about what would be considered “acceptable” or what is a majority use.

The discussion about portal score thresholds is a bit of a pit to fall down and I don’t think raising the score threshold would have prevented this 4th place movie from passing.

The content in this movie is just bad - bile yellow cartoons, limited animation, no lip sync and robotic voices. While the author doesn’t have bad intentions, this shouldn’t be the bar to set how far AI content is acceptable.

Collaboration is becoming a last art and I think we should be better at enforcing that, rather than relying on AI.

You’re right. This looks like an asset from Friday night funkin. Well now this person is stealing art.

You're probably right, though it is super low quality.

Not sure why no one is blammimg it that said.

More stuff should be getting blammed in general. Too much crap like this gets past judgement and now we have to flag it. Coulda just been blammed for being bad but no :/

Maybe the blam threshold could go up to 2.5 tops, since that's roughly the halfway marker between good and shit. Might eliminate legit entries if it's too much. But that's a discussion for another day.

Moving the goalpost, the issue will only get worse by nudging the line

Keep the blam line where its at, no need to raise or lower it.

See I feel that Ai is majority when the use of Ai outweighs the content of what's been done by hand or voice acting in terms of quality, but I feel thats where there may be disagreement.

Personally I think what you described regarding the animation is exactly how I feel in terms of the quality based on what I have seen. I just do not see how the quality of the animation is even at a high ebough quality to justify the use of Ai.

If this is about the reactions I just reacted like so because while your assessment might be correct, I don't think it's very fruitful to keep beating the bush on the author of the video (specially on older art like that). I think it's better to concentrate on the topics at hand (AI, content evaluation, etc.) for this thread. You're free to disagree though!

@Dioshiba

It's not so much AI existing I have a problem with. It's becoming more and more of a religion as the days go on. Goddamn, we got top military generals turning to chatgpt for for fucks sake. A general of the US military, using AI to tell him what to do. Let that sink in.

I'll give you an example of a practical use of AI: The animated movie "across the spider-verse" used their own data they fed into an AI. They did not once use third party data, they used their own to have an AI help them with extremely repetitive tasks. I think AI could very well be used as a tool. Too bad the unwashed masses want to either foam at the mouth over it or think it's a living breathing person that has its own thoughts and feelings. It better be a trend and people can go back to thinking for themselves, I can only hope.

You know what? I think that more people who create their art and music without the use of AI should not be afraid to announce it. Make it visible. It's a virtue and 'stamp of quality' that a lot of us simply sleep on. xD My latest album has an alternate version of the front cover which I use when I post in in places that are more tech-bro and normie friendly than Newgrounds and Cara. :)

That is the movie I'm talking about, I think it's over-reliant on AI. Without being an absolutist it's hard to say if it should be disallowed, since we have made exceptions for other movies that utilize some AI in their production.

This movie still does have human effort involved in certain aspects but if someone used this method to submit frequent movies it would feel like shovelware to me.

In that sense I suppose that the stance as it is now is pretty much comparable with the Source Filmmaker in art portal one, where the concern isn't really about the software but moreso how the typical user tends to make renders that are very easy to produce and could make them in big quantities without much substantial quality, polluting the art portal that way.

This could bring another question where "Would it be valid if something with GenAI or had GenAI involvement had substantial effort and has good quality?", but aside from like the clock movies and that one particular series that dunks on generative AI, I don't think we've seen by ourselves if one can actually use these tools in a serious way like that, so I guess we can left this question answered with "No" until proven otherwise :P

TheJayShow used a small amount of AI generated art in addition to hand drawn animation to make the elements from the "dream sequence" look off and unsettling. I think that is one of the very rare examples of creative use of GenAI.
