October 2025 News Post: Apotheosis Newgrounds Awards (+ Supporter Status), Bandcamp Friday, Better Than The Book LIVE gigs BIG updates, Jabun Lost Tracks updates + a sneak peek for the $10 patrons, an organ video and more!

Hi everyone and hope you've had a great September and start to October (man oh man things feel like they've been moving fast)! It's been a busy hectic month as usual (only set to get to busier) and there's lots of news to share so let's get straight to it!

First of all of course, Jabun's Apotheosis OST was finally released on September 5th, and seems to have gone down very nicely! I've said a lot about it in previous posts so I'll not repeat myself here, but you can find out more over on Bandcamp:

https://jabun.bandcamp.com/

It's also now available worldwide on Spotify and all those places too, and while we're on the topic of Bandcamp, it happens to be Bandcamp Friday again! If you've been meaning to pick up the latest Jabun or Better Than The Book records then now's the best time. Thanks so much for the support if you're able to:

Jabun: https://jabun.bandcamp.com/

Better Than The Book: https://betterthanthebook.bandcamp.com/

Back to Apotheosis, thanks so much to Newgrounds for the 4 front page awards for the project! I'm super happy people have been enjoying the tunes! Check out the full list of awards below:

September 5, 2025 - Jabun's Apotheosis OST album receives Front Page Award on Newgrounds.com

September 7, 2025 - Jabun's Apotheosis - Level 2 receives Front Page Award on Newgrounds.com

September 8, 2025 - Jabun's Apotheosis - Boss Theme receives Front Page Award on Newgrounds.com

September 9, 2025 - Jabun's Apotheosis - Final Boss Theme Phase 1 receives Front Page Award on Newgrounds.com

And the full album is now playlisted on Newgrounds too!

And keeping with the topic of Newgrounds thanks so much to @PhantonArcade for nominating and awarding me Supporter Status for the month! It's a great honour and I hope to be able to become a more permanent supporter properly at some point soon! Newgrounds really means the world to me as one of the greatest communities that I've found on the net, and one of the last places that I still consider uncorrupted by the greed (and other stuff) that fuels much of today's online world. Let's keep building each other up together! Speaking of which, October means Inktober for @Cyberdevil and he's back at it again with a rap a day! I'll have to cook up a beat for him soon!

Onto project updates, starting with Better Than The Book, over the past few months I've been intensely busy preparing for what I hope to be the project's first live show early next year for the 10th anniversary of the debut full-length album Two Years On! Dates have been put in the diary and feelers are out (and penciled) for a venue in Brighton, England with one support act (out of a hopeful two) confirmed for the night so far. The details have still yet to be finalised, but last week we had our first practice since last year, and things went great! So great we forgot to record any footage this time! There's still much to prepare but things are looking in a very good position for early next year including contingencies and backup plans in case of (minor) disaster this time! More details to be announced as soon as I can, and I hope you're as hyped as I am for an HOUR long set of BTTB celebrating Two Years On and much MUCH more! Fingers crossed we can actually get to make it happen this time!

And on the topic of Better Than The Book, the new Side Character In my Own Life album was back on Beefy's Ska Club Radio Show / Podcast last month, this time spinning the lead single from the album "Plot Holes"! Thanks so much to Beefy for sharing the tunes and love and you can listen back to the show below (it's a great one as always):

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/beefys-ska-club-6th-sep-2025-pod-2-ep-657/id1510126760?i=1000726202925

Next onto some Jabun project updates! As you're probably well aware by now, for the last few months (when possible), I've been going back through some of my unfinished/mostly done tracks and polishing them up for what I hope to be a long ongoing "Lost Tracks" project I'll start releasing soon. After finishing one more mix and bring the total to 8 earlier this month, I decided to go back and do the mastering for these 8 tracks before I start on finishing the recording and mixes for the next batch! That's 8 tracks (around 30 minutes so far) which are now mastered and complete out of around 20-30 unfinished tracks I'm hoping to complete over the next few months! I've not thought about a release schedule just yet, but just to tease a little, here are the names of the current completed tracks to come. I hope you're as excited as I am for some more Jabun:

01 Arc Welder

02 Flow State

03 Thinking

04 Cold Case

05 Chocolate Birds Part 1

06 Falling In Love

07 Longing

08 Moving Forward

Another 16 are already somewhat in progress currently, with a few more potential additions (or subtractions) from those! If you're a $10 patron then this month I'm sharing with you the final mix (pre-mastering) for Flow State, right here on Patreon! Head over here to grab the reward and hope you enjoy a new (old unreleased) jam!

$10 Extra reward: https://www.patreon.com/posts/140274727

Finally for this month, I've not being doing much video recording lately, but an unfortunate mishap made for an excellent opportunity to do so! Partway through the month, my Yamaha YC-25D Organ decided that one of the stop tabs (amongst other things) didn't want to work anymore which was very troublesome but after a teardown and deep clean and service its seems to have resolved itself nicely (and actually plays better now that it ever has done)! While I had the organ all opened up, I thought I do a little video explaining how it works, some common faults, and how to try to start solving them! The video seems to have gone down really well too so I hope the community finds it a useful resource. Check it out below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipoKcy-s8vA

And here's a link to the full updated gear related playlist of videos too. Enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWEmqIhrNPvQTBoOjZdKLgL4ecTvLz6sm

And I've still got to a Patch Bay and J-6 sound list video to do at some point soon. Busy busy!!!

That about wraps things up for this month! More BTTB practice and Jabun Lost Tracks work for me this coming month and I recon it's going to be super busy trying to get as much as possible sorted before the next practice! I'll keep you posted with any gig related updates especially and until the next one, thanks as always for supporting my music and projects however you can and especially on Patreon and Newgrounds! Take care and all the best!

November 2025 News Post: Cyberdevil INKtober collaborations + Beats, Better Than The Book LIVE gig updates, BTTB on BBC Radio again + more updates (+ a sneak peek for the $10 patrons)!

Hi everyone and hope you had a great Halloween (I spent it playing spooky video games)! It's been a super busy month prepping for BTTB LIVE stuff while much of my "Jabun energy" has been spent making beats for Cyberdevil's INKtober challenge, so I only got a little bit of arrangement work done for Jabun's Lost Tracks this time (no more mixes complete). Some exclusive downloads to share this time as well as hefty dose of news so let's get straight to it!

First of all as has become tradition, my good friend @Cyberdevil has been back to his usual yearly INKtober challenge where he pens, performs and records a new rap every day for October! This year I threw 2 beats his way and he came up with 2 amazing raps to complete them! The first was a super emotional tribute to his parents. Check it out, it's quite the journey:

And the second turned what I thought would be a throwaway meh b-side beat into something awesome with tight wordplay commentary on the culture of gratuitous movie violence! Check it out below too, I think it's a winner!

I think they were 2 of the highest played tracks this month too not including guest remixes!

And feel free to explore the entire month of Cyberdevil's INKtober challenge over here:

My supporters on patron also have an exclusive download of both instrumental beats below too:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/140648898

A little backstory: both beats were written and performed on my KORG EM-1 Electribe Groovebox (with just some mastering in Ableton after recording) which has been my go-to instrument for these INKtober Challenges for the past few years now. "b55" was the first of the ideas, but as it developed I kind of went in a different direction to what I intended to make so call it the B Side of this year's grooves XD "b59" was the beat I intended to make with a more chill grimey edge! Hope you get a kick out of them!

Onto some Better Than The Book News, in case you missed the show when it aired BTTB's Hold Me Tight (Non-acoustic) from the Side Character In My Own Life album was on BBC Music Introducing The South earlier this month! Check out the replay below and thanks so much for spinning the track Melita!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002kqzp

Melita also shared a HUGE BTTB announcement on the show too, which unfortunately since has been a bit up in the air and needing some correction... Some big news (see last month's post https://www.patreon.com/posts/138213103/) I'd HOPED to have shared is that Better Than The Book will be playing its very ever LIVE show on Friday 6th of February at the Hope & Ruin in Brighton but unfortunately an error/miscommunication in the venue booking has left us without a venue for that date at the moment! We're working hard to restore and finalise the date/venue details and aim to have it sorted in the next week or so, so keep an eye out for a big concrete announcement later this month if all goes to plan! In other news though, if aIl's still good we've confirmed our second support act band for the night and it's looking to be an amazing night to come! Amazingly too, the previously alluded to first support band just had their BBC Radio debut on the same show as I was on, but the following week's episode. See if you can guess who we'll be playing with (they're friggin' fantastic). All will be revealed soon! Keep a note on your calendars!

Next, a couple of Tuesday Takeover features to share on Newgrounds! Thanks so much for sharing the music guys:

October 7, 2025 - Jabun's Apotheosis - Final Boss Theme Phase 2 featured in Takeover Tuesday on Newgrounds.com (by Cyberdevil)

October 21, 2025 - Cyberdevil and Jabun's Cyberdevil's Back featured in Takeover Tuesday on Newgrounds.com (by larrynachos)

And while there was no new YouTube videos this month (and I've still got to a Patch Bay and J-6 sound list video to do at some point too), I will be sharing those INKtober beats on my JabunAudio YouTube Channel in the coming weeks too!

That's about it for this month unless you're a $10 patron in which case I'm sharing with you the final mix (pre-mastering) download for "Thinking" from the upcoming Jabun Lost Tracks project (a very old idea that's finally coming to fruition)! Head over here to grab the reward and hope you enjoy a new (old unreleased) jam!

$10 Extra Reward: https://www.patreon.com/posts/142736671

It's set to be a super busy month ahead finalising these gig details, and I'll actually be down South again for another big rehearsal too so should be very exciting! Until the next update (which I'm hoping will be the long overdue gig announcement in a week or so), I hope you have a great November to come and thanks as always for supporting my music and projects however you can! All the best and take care and I can't wait to share some HUGE news with you soon!

Better Than The Book announces its VERY FIRST LIVE SHOW: Ten Years On, with Special Guests Look What Happened & LUVD! Thursday 5th February 2026 @ The Hope & Ruin, Brighton (UK)!

iu_1494492_1338520.webp

Well folks, HUGE news! After over 6 years preparation and much recent teasing on my part, we're FINALLY ready to make the biggest announcement of my musical journey so far:

My DIY ska-punk project Better Than The Book will be celebrating Ten Years On from the debut full-length album Two Years On by playing its first ever live show on Thursday 5th February 2026 at The Hope & Ruin in Brighton! With the big anniversary coming up, myself and the live band guys, Sam, Eamon & Andy agreed this was the perfect time to finally push for the stage and after many MANY setbacks and going around in circles, it's finally FINALLY set in stone!

We did aim for the actual anniversary of Feb 6th, but quickly realised that Friday nights are INCREDIBLY difficult to book apparently if it's your first gig! We managed to secure our dream venue of The Hope & Ruin in Brighton though! I've shared the stage with Andy many times there back in our LCA days and it's a great venue for a high energy music party! The capacity is only 150 peeps though so get your tickets booked as soon as you can to secure your place. I honestly have NO idea when we'll next be doing a live show, especially as grand and special as this one! Book your tickets below:

https://www.fatsoma.com/e/q2ub5sxo/better-than-the-book-presents-ten-years-on-with-special-guests-look-what-happened-luvd

And for the extra keen among you, use the promo code "TENYEARSON" (ALL CAPS) for a £1 off your ticket! Limited to the first few people though so get there first if you want the discount!

And be sure to get there early on the night too! Doors open at 7pm with the music planned to start promptly at 7:30pm. You don't want to miss a thing; it's gonna be one heck of a night!

As a little sneak peek of what to expect: we've prepared a 1 hour set of ours and the radio proven fan favourite songs for you folks, 14 songs from across Better Than The Book's 14 year discography + a few surprises for you! Get ready for a ska-punk, pop-punk, alterative rock party like no other!

But it's not just us playing OHHHH NO! You can't have a big party like this without friends so we've hand-picked two of Brighton's best and fantastic up-and-coming bands for a half hour set each as well! Say hello to Look What Happened, a pop-punk quintet who released their debut self-titled 3 track EP earlier this year and even made their BBC Radio debut last month, and LUVD, an alternative rock quintet who's been gathering momentum on the Brighton live scene and prepping to release their debut single in the next few weeks! It's an amazing pleasure to be playing alongside both of you and we can't wait to hit the stage with you in February! It's gonna be a night to remember!

A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! It's been a LONG journey in the works and I am SO excited for next year! Thanks so much for sticking with me and my friends on this musical journey and I hope to see you from the stage on Thursday 5th February 2026 at The Hope & Ruin in Brighton! Much love, take care, and more updates coming soon!

Indeed! Only took 6 years lol XD All set in stone now though, no backing out :D Yeah Billy from Look What Happened has a reputation as some sort of Spotify algorithm wizard of sorts! All well deserved plays there! I've been in talks with him about gigging together for a long times! I think he actually organised my very first gig on the Brighton scene in a different band back in the day too :D

In the bigger scope of things what's a mere 2/3 of a decade huh? XD Oh! Interesting. I wonder if he's got some machines running Spotify plays too then hmm, boosting numbers... well no, good marketing and music goes a long way too of course! :P And good titles, covers, suitable use of buzzwords, good timing, reaching people really is an artform too...

Oh that's cool! :D It all goes full circle now then!

When you put it that way, yeah, 6 years out of the 14 that BTTB has been a thing isn't so much in the grand scheme of things! I think he just really knows the game and how it works well (playlisting etc...), and I'm sure Spotify's getting pretty good at cracking down on fake plays etc. so I don't think it'd be that. It sure does help that the music is fantastic already! They put on a great live show too from what I've seen :) Hehe, I feel like in a scene like this, everyone knows everyone else from somewhere (or at least knows someone who knows them) XD It's a small world!

Ah I meant the briefness of the timespan more as a joke, but indeed, it really is not that much even in overall BTTB lineage! XD Right, playlists too, that's a big thing...

I think you can still easily amount real plays to skew the statistics, if you just keep a device running with an artist playlist on it, but I'm curious how many actually do that. It's a time and energy consuming endeavor beyond the questionable ethics of it all (though seems a harmless thing to me), so if your goal is to boost earnings, then I wonder if you wouldn't actually be going at a loss that way, for anything but the potential benefits of extra attention...

Anyway this is all just stuff I've been pondering, no assumptions as to aforementioned band's Spotify popularity tactics! :P With a little luck it seems you can easily get a huge boost just with the right people stumbling upon your content too.

Ah I'm looking forward to that too then! :D Seems a good community to grow up in as a musician hmm! Or a community you grow up as a musician in? :P Maybe a little bit of both...

Ahaha fair (On all accounts). I wonder though whether the royalties artificially inflating like that would actually outweigh electricity/cost running all those devices to get the plays? I do recon just a great placement in a good playlist (or recommendation from a high ranking gatekeeper so to speak goes a long way.

And indeed to both, re the Sussex/Brighton music scene. I do miss being more regularly active in it. Good to be back!

Right, that's the kind of energy I was thinking of there too. XD Indeed other energy expended too then...

December 2025 News Post: Better Than The Book announces its "Ten Years On" debut live show, practices and project updates, Bandcamp Friday, press features + a video from Better Than The Book's Live Drummer Andy Forman for the $10 patrons!

iu_1502228_1338520.webp

Hi everyone and hope you're having a great start to the festive season! With the weeks closing in on Better Than The Book's "Ten Years On" debut live show, its been a super hectic month and only set to get busier! Let's start this one with a round up of the news since last time!

First of all and the BIG news for the month, Better Than The Book announced its debut live show "Ten Years On" with Special Guests Look What Happened & LUVD for Thursday 5th February 2026 @ The Hope & Ruin, Brighton (UK)! You can read all about it below:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/144011666

And grab your tickets on Fatsoma! Use the promo code "TENYEARSON" (ALL CAPS) for a £1 off your ticket!

https://www.fatsoma.com/e/q2ub5sxo/better-than-the-book-presents-ten-years-on-with-special-guests-look-what-happened-luvd

It's set to be a fun night of ska, pop punk and alternative rock as you'd expect from BTTB, and we'll be playing a 14 track, 1 hour set to celebrate 10 years since the Two Years On debut full-length album was released, and 14 years of Better Than The Book! Not only that, but our special guests Look What Happened and LUVD will each be playing 30 minute sets before we get on stage! I can't wait and I hope to see you there!

With the gig only 2 months away now, it's been a very busy month of practice for everyone involved! We unfortunately couldn't coordinate our schedules again this time, so there were actually 2 big group practices this month, one without our drummer Andy, and one without me (which I'm told was very strange)! Things seem to be taking shape well though and I'm looking forward to our next session in January where things should be pretty much solid! We did (video) record both sessions, with that second session (sans me) recorded with a fancy audio multitrack system allowing me to mix the band in post in the studio! I've been playing around with it and it's VERY fun! Expect to see and hear some clips from those in the coming months, and if you're a $10 patron, you actually have an early sneak peek clip from one of BTTB's live drummer Andy Forman's solo practice sessions now! In other project news, as I've been away and/or busy with preparing for this BTTB gig, there hasn't been too much time for Jabun's Lost Tracks, but I have made a start on the projects artwork! Slowly but surely moving forward, but this'll likely be on the back-burner again for a while as it has been since 2019. I'll be aiming to start releasing the first batch of tracks soon next year. Back to BTTB, there have been some other interesting developments happening too, buuuut I'm not allowed to talk about them just yet! Expect some more updates in January!

Next for this month's news, it's the final Bandcamp Friday of the year! You know the drill by now, so if you want to help support the independent artists you love (not just me) go pick up something from Bandcamp today! Thanks so much for supporting independent music!

That about wraps things up for this post! It's set to be a super busy time practicing and preparing for this big gig, and hopefully I'll get a chance to finish off that Jabun Lost Tracks artwork while I'm at it too! Until the next one, go grab your gig tickets before they're gone, happy holidays, and thanks as always for supporting Better Than The Book, Jabun and my various projects as always! Enjoy the rest of 2025, and I'll see you next year!

January 2026 News Post: 1 month until Better Than The Book's debut live show, lots of videos, BTTB featured in video game Ally's New Life, a round-up of 2025 + early access to the artwork for Jabun's upcoming Lost Tracks collection for the $10 patrons!

Hi everyone and hope you're having a great start to 2026! It's been SUPER busy over here and is looking to be until Better Than The Book's big debut LIVE show in just less than a month's time! I can certainly appreciate why the big bands have their own managers and departments for this kind of stuff so they can focus on practice and the art! It is HECKTIC! It's a beginning of the year post so let's get straight to the news before reflecting on another year gone by (and boy was it a busy one)!

First up for this month, as mentioned above, most of my time has been spent preparing for BTTB's upcoming big LIVE show: practicing, promoting, sorting out the venue logistics, etc... before some brief downtime for the holidays! There's a load of surprises I'll not reveal just yet, but it's only a month left until the show so if you're planning on coming then head over to Fatsoma to grab your tickets before they all go! Use the promo code "TENYEARSON" (ALL CAPS) for a £1 off your ticket too! I look forward to seeing you there!

Time's flying and more stuff to come about the above preparations when we get to all the new videos later in the post!

Meanwhile, while I've not been doing any recording or formal production last month, I have taken the time to make and finalise the artwork for Jabun's upcoming Lost Tracks project! Artwork is all complete, so this month I'm giving early access to the $10 patrons! Check out the post below:

I'll be aiming to start releasing these new tracks (8 are complete so far, with another potentially 16 to come?) soon after Better Than The Book's LIVE show so expect more updates in March!

Next a fun feature for Better Than The Book: Side Character In My Own Life has been featured in the indie video game Ally's New Life here on Newgrounds! The track is part of a secret mode, so let's see if you find it without any hints, but I hear there's an update coming soon for easier access to the secrets too. Thanks so much to Some-Crappy-Edits for having me on the project and enjoy "Ally's New Life"! It's super cool!

The game also went on to receive a Front Page and Daily 3rd Place award too! Awesome work peeps!

Onto videos for the month, let's start with some holiday funtimes! My twin Eamon has been back to his usual holiday meme-filled mash-up spree and has released another 6 track Christmas EP! Check out his full list of mashups here and the new EP runs from #72 -> #76! Thanks so much Eamon!

Now onto my own videos + some special guest appearances from the Better Than The Book LIVE Band! There's a load of practice videos from various rehearsals, though strangely none of the 4 of us together this time, just Andy (drumming) solo, the band minus Andy, and the band minus Me! Makes for some interesting focus / breakdown! We're set for a big all 4 of us rehearsal next week though so expect some full band videos again soon! On top of that I've been back on organ trying out some new techniques and I've finally recorded the finale for the setting up the studio series this time focused on Patch Bays! Check out the updated playlist below:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWEmqIhrNPvQTBoOjZdKLgL4ecTvLz6sm

And here's a list of the new additions:

  • Andy drums Heartbeats - The KNIFE
  • Hearts Racing (LIVE Band Practice 14-11-2025 sans Andy's drums)!
  • Digging Cat Rapid Ghost Notes Organ Technique
  • Undead Education (LIVE Band Practice 14-11-2025 sans Nick)!
  • New Studio Part 7: Patch Bay + Mixer (FINALE)
  • Artificial Ignorance (LIVE Band Practice 14-11-2025 sans Andy's drums)!
  • Andy Plot Holes Drums

With the "New Studio" series finished now I put together a playlist of all the videos in the journey starting from closing up the old one! I hope you enjoy it and it helps inspire you on your own studio builds!

More Better Than The Book videos coming soon and I still need to record a video about the Roland J-6 sound sheet I put together last year. That's low priority for the mo though! I need to pace myself and prioritise in these busy times!

Finally for this post a yearly round-up for 2025! This post got a bit long for the forum, so head over to the following post for the full rundown:

https://jabun.newgrounds.com/news/post/1593201

That about wraps things up for this post! It's gonna be a heck of a busy month until the show in February, but I've ordered myself a new little audio toy/tool too (an Electro Harmonix Attack Decay Pedal (the 2019 one)), so I'm looking forward to having some fun with that when I can. It's been a long while since I bought some new equipment for the fun of it! Until the next post, I hope you have a great start to the year, come grab a ticket for the show and thanks as always for supporting my music and various projects however you can! Here's to a great 2025 and an even better (but not necessarily busier) 2026 to come! Take care!
