True, but at least, due to the sheer nature of it being open source, there is hope that someone would make a fork of it that tries to de-enshittify it. ;)

Yes. But it's just that: Hope. Not a garuntee

You previously could buy a perpetual license for one single release and then pay to upgrade, but now subscription only (Though I've heard you can email sales team to get a perpetual license). Their reasoning was that it was too difficult to explain to users perpetual licensing, so they removed it. You guys going to stay with TB or move on? I'm against mandatory subscriptions for offline software, so I wouldn't use this even if I had unlimited funds to do whatever.

This may or may not have to do with a US company buying toonb boom and changing business model.

Where did you see this repsonse out of interest?

If you think its worth it, we wont judge.

But know that you're only doing a disservice to yourself for tolerating subscription services and I can say that having experience with adobe.

I remember when this came out and I still think its insulting to the consumer to say we dont understand what a perpetual license is like we're idiots.

Its not about what we understand, we all know what its really about.

Dude, I agree- this entire thing sucks.

Years ago, I (with the help of my Mom because she wanted to help me achieve my dreams), have purchased perpetual licenses for both Storyboard Pro and Toon Boom Harmony- and that with just adding onto support yearly and such was already expensive in of itself. Seeing all the whole "monthly" payments, it's just too pricy for what it's worth.

Holy crap dude-- I couldn't have said it better myself, you hit the nail on the head w/ this one.

It sucks to have to navigate these things as an independent artist and someone who isn't making much with her work.

It is also bizarre that software like Toon Boom and Adobe products are constantly hiking prices and removing more affordable options for indies and hobbyists, while also heavily pushing for AI technology that potentially makes the human user behind the software redundant and is already permanently eliminating entry-level jobs that make it possible to potentially make a consistent living making digital art in the first place. Like, how does Toon Boom in this case expect us to justify the monthly cost of their software, even want to use it over FOSS alternatives for our silly unpaid Newgrounds personal projects, while also working on Ember AI in hopes that it eliminates the need for large-scale studio production in general, let alone human employees in said studios? It just makes no long-term business sense to me to constantly charge more and more for software while (attempting to, at least) take away the very career paths that allow people to easily justify said software costs. Of course, publicly-traded companies or victims of corporate consolidation aren't exactly known for prioritizing the long-term health of the business over short-term gains.

I don't have a PC yet. I use RoughAnimation, which is cheap and very useful for what I do. If I have a PC? Well. Boom Toon won't be my option, oh yes, definitely not lmao

Ugh, yeah — saw that move from Toon Boom. Total sellout vibes. “Too hard to explain perpetual licensing”? Please. That’s just corporate-speak for “we like predictable cash flow more than loyal customers.” 🤮

Mandatory subs for offline software is straight-up dystopian. Like, why am I paying rent on something I’m running on my own hardware? It’s not a service, it’s a tool — let me own it.

Honestly, kinda feels like the scene’s getting smaller but louder. If they wanna play that game, maybe it’s time we bounce. Open-source and indie devs still give a damn — and they don’t treat artists like walking wallets.

Not gonna lie, even if I had a mountain of cash, I wouldn’t back that model. It’s not about the money — it’s the principle.

I switched to Moho Pro 14 and I have no regrets. Toonboom can get bent.
