isn't AI known to mess up shit all the time too? there's no way it's going to be accurate lol... I can't wait for YouTube to think I'm 8 years old based off of what I'm watching!

Nice! Yeah I've actually been getting a head start since posting this. It just felt weird to be watching YouTube while trying to push for a boycott. So I've been exploring other platforms, got back into my music. Its actually be really nice.

In opposition, I will be boycotting the entire platform on that day.
No uploads, no views, all tabs closed.

I invite others to join me and take the opportunity to engage in non digital media - books, movies, music, hell just go outside.

But if you must be at a screen, I would suggest that you at least go to one of YouTube's competitors and send a clear message:

FUCK THIS
I agree that’s fucking stupid! Some users have been changing their profile pics on YT to that of Clippy. (Myself included, and even my brother). To send some sort of Anti A.I. Rebellion message to them. There was even a video on the site telling users to change their picture to Clippy. Because unlike today’s stupid A.I. crap quote the video “Clippy was trying to help”. (Even if he was annoying). That’s why I uploaded what will probably be my last two videos on YouTube for a while yesterday because of this crap. If you wish to check out my YouTube channel feel free to do so. Hopefully sooner than later I’ll be able to change my picture back.

I also changed to Clippy on YT. And that's not specifically because of anti AI rebellion, but rather silent protest against corrupt corporations trying to screw you over. But yes, as you put it, it harkens back to the days when technology didnt have an ulterior motive and just wanted to provide you a good experience. It was started by Louis Rossmann and has spread like wildfire.

Yeah that's what I said. Read a book, watch a movie, touch grass, anything. But don't continue to engage with a platform as it adds more and more policies that screw you over. And the fact that there really is no real competition to them is part of the problem. Part of why they can get away with this shit.

I'm ready for my childhood dreams of being a successful youtuber to be crushed tomorrow
I've already made peace with the fact that I'll quit YouTube
of course, I'll still watch it here and there because I won't find that specific content anywhere else, and I use it for background music when I'm working on stuff... but in terms of actually making content? yeahhhhh I don't think so

I've been enjoying NewGrounds a whole lot more anyway, I'll just start focusing on making more content here lol
plus, I have been overall improving my life, adding more stuff to do that isn't on a screen
for one, I've been working out more and I've already seen some improvements
I wasn't able to lift a 25 pound weight before but now I can do it just fine
(I also have a legit LIBRARY of manga in my bedroom so I've got enough content to consume if the internet hits the fan lol)

Do you. Though IMO uploading to YouTube is the lesser of 2 evils. Consuming on YouTube pumps their numbers and gives them ad revenue. Uploading uses their server space and doesnt even guarantee ad revenue for you or them. Posting a video about how they're doing this certainly wouldn't be in their best interest. But I applaud you living life away from a screen. As I said above, this is a great opportunity for a lot of us to touch grass and tap into our backlogs... it's almost like sites like YT and TikTok have held us hostage from engaging in other media.

What about; If I still (ab)use youtube, only to look up music. Not actually playing them (so no clicks, add-roll, likes, subs, or bell-hitting). But just right-clicking to copy the links. Then pasting them on some site to let me convert the songs from YT, into a free mp3.

Sounds gud too?

Why is that necessary? Any artist you want to listen to likely has a Spotify / Soundcloud. But personally, Im just going to not interact with the site at all. It monitors your every move. So they know if you're on there copying links

It is necessary, because I want to have the stuff I listen to, save (and sound!) to use untill the end of my (devices') days. Instead of how long the online-services will let me use it.

And also because phones nowadays are oversized flat bricks, that don't fit nice into your pockets anymore. And they don't have sweet buttons anymore either, and spotify has add and subs, wich can suck on my sweaty (and hairy!) crown jewels.

Rather have the good stuff, on a sweet lil mp3 player, chillin offline in my pocket, independent of a working internet connection between my machine and Spoopify's dumb-assed-add-ridden-servers (and creepy data collection to boot!).

So yeah, quite necessary if ya ask me matey! (Yarrrrrrgh!)

OR

Are they truly going so orwellian that even browsing without an account will get you scanned. If the latter, we already lost, pre-crime is already here.

Youtube or rather google is a company that dominates the internet simply because there is no competition. So 1 day without a few people active is nothing to their eyes.

I for one have combated them by removing search history and watch history from my account, since those are elements that the AI will target. Not only that but it confuses the algorithm. I am like a blank slate to them now. After that I simply logged out and have been using youtube without an account. Even going as far as to use it only in incognito mode. Why? You might ask, because it keeps the algorithm from storing any further info to build off of and It might even confuse the AI. It's unlikely though but worth a shot.

Regardless, youtube has been on a downfall for a while now and I have been too addicted to watching it's content when I am faced with boredom. So this is also my chance to reduce my usage of youtube in general and find something else to actually do for once.

It's also the reason that I am on newgrounds now, since I had been searching for alternatives and I can definitely say, this place is quite special and I wish more people would use it/support it.

You are 100% right, one day is not enough. It needs to be an ongoing thing until they change.

I have no intentions of using YouTube as a consumer again any time soon (I've got an anime backlog calling my name), though where things get complicated for is trying to build an audience for my animations - and YouTube was a big part of that.

But yes, you raise a good point and I shouldn't compromise what matters for selfish reasons. I will likely have to rethink my business strategy.

That definitely makes it more complicated. Newgrounds and social media is the only ways I could think of for building an audience outside of youtube. I would hope for more people to flock to newgrounds but I think the biggest issue is not that people wouldn't use newgrounds but rather many don't know about it or don't know that it has more than just.. well.. hentai lol.

Damn... Youtube really does have a grasp on many people, especially if youtube is a creators only way of supporting themselves. I am not sure what the right move is here but I don't think you would be selfish to continue using it for your animations if it's necessary but that's also a double edge sword if youtube ever decides you need ID verification...

What we really need is a true competitor to youtube as all the current alternatives have little followings. Not to mention the content on those platforms often gets drowned in political news, which unfortunately deters people from using them.

All we can hope for is change honestly, not just in youtube but in the internet and the world itself.

I just came to newgrounds because it was the most suitable for my content, and now I'll have to heavily change a lot of my previous videos if I want to upload them here, because I'll have to remove all copyrighted music and add full english dubs (I'm a Spanish animator, and as far as I've seen, the mayority of people from Newgrounds are english speakers), so... I guess it's the cost I'll have to pay in order not to use YouTube anymore.

Ngl i've been pre-emptively boycotting youtube because of this. Both to send a message but also to break the general reliance i've had on it for entertainment. I downloaded a VPN, so i might be able to circumvent it. But in the case it doesn't work. Guess what? I'm already getting used to just not using it and going to other places if i want some entertaiment. sometimes just vibing listening to chill music is enough for me. (I watched the first GoTG the other night, and i've been chilling to the Awesome Mixtape album. Recommend Fooled Around and Fall In Love by Elvin Bishop).

I support Boycotting Youtube. I've seen some people say we raised up a fuss about Dislikes, and they didn't do shit. But like this isn't just a kind of shitty thing they're doing that realistically, most of their casual user base wouldn't notice, this is literally "Hey so our totally reliable AI system think you are -6 years old. give us your address, social security number, and credit card number so you can continue watching fuckin Quinton Reviews or some shit". I really feel like more people will raise a fuss about this. That might just be wishful thinking, but it's better than doomering about it.

So yeah. For me at least, Youtube is basically just gonna be that ex that you only bring up just to make fun of going forward. I can see Youtube being stubborn enough to not change it, but also a big corporation doesn't think in morals, they think in money. if enough people just stop using Youtube because of this, they might consider it imo.

you could have a monopoly on the hoover damn but without water it means nothing.

As i mentioned before, it's operating at a loss currently.

Where i feel it's a lost cause; is having faith people will care enough to commit to the boycott or at the very least some other form of protest.

They have a failsafe to "combat bots" where on occasion if you're using an adblocker or something. They'll prevent you from watching a video of any kind until you sign in to "confirm that you're not a bot". It's not really about combating bots. It's more of Google's attempts at waging war against adblocking.

So there's a good chance they might pull this in order to force them to give ID.

edit: Oddly enough the bot flagging system doesn't prevent you from looking at Youtube shorts.

I'm pretty much done with Youtube after learning this. Just the thought of potentially having to give my ID to watch the slop on there for one or two channels I sub to is enough to get me to stop using it cold turkey. (silver lining, i've been meaning to give up on the more mainstream sites like YT and Twitter anyways so it's a good excuse)

to continue, I used to use stupidvideos and newgrounds back before youtube was a thing. I can always replace it with another service that doesn't ask for my ID.

Time is a circle and all.

I am also boycotting Youtube, moving to other platforms such as:

-Odysee

-Neocities

-Here at Newgrounds

-Soundcloud, or making my own damn music.

They are gonna be trying so hard to get my personal information, meanwhile I'm going back to working on my personal projects.

It's been said before, it'll be said again.

Boycotting the platform for one day isn't going to do shit.

If you're serious about boycotting youtube in any capacity, delete your gmail, delete your youtube accounts, take everything off your smartphone related to google, and stay off the platform for the rest of your life. Not one day, not one month. not even a single solitary year. Just erase your existence from it.

Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

This whole thread is just virtue signaling at it's core and if you think that telling other people to boycott it for one day is doing anything, then you're not doing anything of value.

I don't care what kind of attitude you think I have toward this.
