If you're serious about boycotting youtube in any capacity, delete your gmail, delete your youtube accounts, take everything off your smartphone related to google, and stay off the platform for the rest of your life. Not one day, not one month. not even a single solitary year. Just erase your existence from it.

Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

This whole thread is just virtue signaling at it's core and if you think that telling other people to boycott it for one day is doing anything, then you're not doing anything of value.

I don't care what kind of attitude you think I have toward this.

Wow... people being optimistic and having solidarity really makes you that angry? If you want to be fatalistic and defeatist that's your prerogative.

But going in and telling people that they're stupid for having hope and standing up for their rights is really just a sour, asshole move...

Maybe it wont do anything, maybe it will. But I can rest easy knowing I did my part and tried something.

Seriously dude... If you don't agree with it, that's fine, take your nihilistic attitude elsewhere.

I agree with you, despite your internet tough guy attitude. But alas, I cannot delete my google because it's mandatory for using android. You literally cannot avoid google in some circumstances unless you use a browser that doesn't have images, css, or JavaScript support. And raw HTML4 won't get you very far.

New newgrounds user here! I'm admittedly kinda nervous considering I've only ever really watched things in the youtube space. If anyone else is just joining the party now like I am, we got this! Just hold out and don't stop until the change is reverted.

A lot of these people I follow can't claim ignorance on this it's their job. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until the 11th hour since they have no control ultimately.

It's a combination of legal woes and massive pressure for google to do something about kids being online. Unless google collapses entirely, I don't see things getting better.

If you're going to do something to actually hurt google's business, then you have to go the extra mile if you want a boycott to be effective.

Do you even realize how many boycotts like this have been attempted only for the exact corporations that you are protesting against to continue with the same thing?

They don't care if it's one day.

Your optimism is misplaced if you think that they will, they're just going to do the exact same thing that they've always been doing because of how much money is involved. And that's the reality of the situation.

That is admitedly something I've thought of, and even then there's someways to hurt their revenue that have been employed for years. Ad-Blockers, alternative browsers / search engines (Sure that offloads the problem but our focus is google,) and Free alternatives to cloud services. (More minimal as most people use free plans, but any amount counts.)

What alternatives? Your only choices are truly google, bing, or yandex. Everything else like DDG and the like just give you semi-anonymized (if it even is) from google or bing. And trust me, DDG despite some things to praise about it, is rather poor in search accuracy. You have to pick between two american companies or the russians (Doesn't china have their own search engine?) whom you trust to know your searches.

Like I said, I agree with DioShiba on the rant that one day isn't going to make a difference, but there is a logical limit on how far you truly go with it without going full ted kazinzki.

Why on earth would they. Google owns android (The most popular smart phone brand in the world), they have search engine, drive, photos, YouTube and a dozen other services. Google makes money off ad-revenue. They might have slightly shifted away from using flash to power advertisements online, but so many people don't even know adblockers exist that you and me are no true threat.

Fair enough. I can't exactly refute that, just was hoping to have a little optimism in the face of the fact boycotting youtube alone won't be enough.

For a website specifically, I cant say, but I'm sure it's happened. It happens in games all the time. And to reiterate, getting them to change isn't necessarily my point. My point is to not be part of the problem. If they change as a result of my action, all the better.

Isn't Duck Duck Go the best alternative to google right now?

At least far as search engines go that might be the best alternative to that specific portion of google.

Youtube will to roll out an all-new AI-based age verification system in the United States on Wednesday, August 13. Initially, the tests will be conducted on a small amount of YouTube’s audience in the US. It will eventually become more pervasive when the concept starts working at par with how it performs in other cities around the world.

The new system will only remain effective when the viewers are logged into their accounts on YouTube. It will assess viewers' age regardless of their date of birth, which people enter at the time of sign up.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the correction

I would say possibly yes. I was thinking of startpage and searx (remember those?), when I said DDG just gives you third party results, that actually did just give you google/bing results. DDG appears to be independent, but it needs improvements because it's a grab bag. But most concerning, is how the creators past history involved selling data. We have no proof any wrongdoings, but still, something to raise an eyebrow over.

That's true.... Honestly a part of me hopes that Google does face a collapse someday if that wishful thinking ever comes to pass but that's in a very unlikely scenario.
