sadly, five months ago my advanced features we're disabled, so I had to send a six-second video of myself to youtube. I regretted it as soon as they we're announcing this in summer. But this, it happened to me around April. yeah screw this big corpo capitalist bullshit. unfortunately I couldn't participate in the boycott, but I will be rooting for everyone who's participating!

Regardless of the effectiveness of boycotting or simply not using YouTube for a while, I think this is as good an excuse as any to finally wean myself off of YouTube outside of the occasional tutorial and other educational content I simply cannot find anywhere else, no matter how hard I try. It's a good sign I should have reduced my YouTube slop consumption years ago when I no longer even had the attention span to even watch a 6-minute Looney Tunes short or 11-minute SpongeBob episode like I could do no problem before my high school friends at the time finally convinced me to start uploading on the site myself.
I've often used the excuse that I stay on YouTube because I need one relatively-mainstream website to share my animations and grow an audience, not just niche little Newgrounds. But let's be honest, I've witnessed firsthand how YouTube's algorithm changed since the very beginning, going from rewarding me for making amateur crap as a 16-year-old with hundreds of views per video, to how it is today, where no matter if I make high-effort animations with large gaps between uploads; low-effort experimental stuff that is uploaded constantly; whether I chase the algorithm and certain trends or just do my own thing, I'm lucky if even my own parents can effortlessly find my stuff, even if I'm objectively more competent and even upload far more frequently than when I first set up my account at age 16. My channel was even randomly demonetized somewhere in the mid-2010's, not because I did anything bad or even that my YouTube videos were not kid-friendly, but possibly because that was around the time I went to college for animation, and as a result, outside of class assignments I was required by my professors to upload on YouTube, I effectively went on a four-year upload hiatus and YouTube punished me accordingly for choosing to finally improve my fundamentals over chasing the algorithm game for a while like everyone else. In fact, a lot of changes to YouTube's algorithm since then seems specifically designed to get old YouTube accounts, whether it's tiny obscure ones like mine or once-mighty symbols of early YouTube like Angry Video Game Nerd, to quit to make room for newer, younger talent or something.
Meanwhile, I'm continuing to happily upload to Newgrounds for the simple, cynical reason that my stuff gets more views and comments (especially helpful feedback) here than I could ever get on my aging YouTube account at this point. The lack of an "algorithm" that punishes me for going too long between high-effort, ambitious video uploads helps a ton, too, in fact if anything the Movie Portal crowd would probably prefer it if I take MORE time to polish my animations for them. Heck, my stuff gets far more views/feedback on niche forums like BlenderArtists or weird corners of LinkedIn than on YouTube. It's time I seriously asked myself if I still need YouTube that bad to reach a wider audience when even LinkedIn of all places is doing a better job not burying my stuff from my irl family and friends.

I don't understand why YouTube cares so much about people being underage. They got rid of the messaging feature in 2017 and I honestly don't think there are that many threats on a platform so hevially monitored. It's just going to make things harder and make creators loose a lot of their audience. Google has a track record for being fucking idiots ngl. I hate it. I use VK for videos right now, barely anything is in English but it's something.

This harkens back to issues with Elsagate. People had such a big problem with the content farms exploiting youtubes algorithm (edit: going without saying, inappropriate content shown to minors) so they figure it would be easier to put a band aid on a gaping wound.
Youtube doesn't care, but they would rather save face and maintain the illusion something is being done.

How long do we have to go on just to thwart AI being used to determine if you're a child or not? It's honestly worryingly.

The toxicity of an algo that punishes it's users for daring to have an actual life outside of the platform isn't talked about nearly as much as it should be.
youtube really changed for the worst, at first I thought it was an app with lots of fun and nostalgic joy, but now it's just a deep down AI age verification who's trying to invade our privacy
I made videos on there So I made my newgrounds account as my backup
Remember folks! A boycott only works if you hold your ground until you get what you want, a few days, weeks or even months will not be enough. I moved here from YouTube because of the new policy and I am not going back until they drop the policy (if they never drop the policy, no loss, it seems all of the creators I enjoy are here too anyways so I won't be missing out on too much).
From what I heard it is an attempt to use their wallet account to remove security measures. Tech companies want this paying quickly with little notice from consumers. By making it more tedious they say they have new way to make it easier. if this extortion it should be investigated. However ones in power currently can be easily persuaded or terminated with consequence being ignored until a judge sees but well...

We'll have to wait and see just how this AI model will handle our view history to determine our age, but either way I believe this whole thing is the shittiest card YouTube ever pulled on us ever since the devil bought the rights to it in 2017.
For now I've changed my PFP to Clippy on YT, and if it's really as bad as people are scared it will be, then I'll consider boycotting it.

I'm personally planning to use a YouTube fork listed on this blog post:
https://protonvpn.com/blog/youtube-alternatives/
It'll be a pain in the ass to migrate, but on the bright side no more bullshit from YT!
If that doesn't work I'll just download every single video I've watched and make my own library of YouTube content.

Hey, I'm new here and I just came from said youtube boycott. I have a question, am I allowed to post video essays on this website? Or is this still an exclusively animation sharing site rather than a video-sharing site in general?

I'll try to boycott for as long as I can, but I won't be able to completely drop youtube just yet. There's still stuff that I can't find elsewhere.
Music I can easily track down; but things like streamer vods (since twitch vods don't last forever) or video essays on niche things will be a lot harder to find alternative sources for.
I honestly think about deleting my YouTube content all the time. If there was a good alternative, I'd be all over it. But where can I post appreciation for classic gaming? Not that YouTube allows anyone not rich to gain traction. Still, it feels sad. Maybe I can make art vids for here and start over. I'm already in the process of getting rid of my emails in terms of use in exchange for proton mail. Maybe I should go all the way. Maybe we all need to kick YouTube to the ground.

I've been considdering getting myself a proton email. Tbh I've been thinking about alternatives to Gmail as of late and looking into it, its probably better than most despite having to pay for better space.
Actually. On the note of alternatives to google and at the cost of being slightly hypocritical I think its worth noting that PewDiePie actually made a video about some of tge other options hes taken to get away from the majority of Google's services.

I used Protonmail for a while and I enjoyed it a lot, I will probably make another e-mail. Another cool email provider I use instead of gmail is Tutanota, the only "negative" element is that you have to log in once every six months. If you don't log in after six months your email gets deleted automatically and you can't get it back not even with recovery codes. You can upgrade to a Premium and delete the email whenever you want, but even with basic features I love it a lot!
I also used mailbox.org based on Germany (I favour German-based servers and email providers because of strong privacy protection laws). If you pay, you can enable custom domains. Users can choose between their web client or third party desktop clients like Thunderbird (which I use on Linux).
Here a list of privacy-focused emails:

Oh and I recommend using GrayJay on mobile since freetube is PC only. GrayJay lets you subscribe, like, favorite, create playlists, comment, etc on all steaming platforms including YouTube without a YouTube account. Your playlists and subscriptions are local, and your comments and likes are on a polycentric account (you can opt out of this) hosted by FUTO. Also no ads on any of the platforms.
GrayJay is source available and free.
Companies in general need to stop asking for more and more personal information, getting way too out of hand.

If Tumblr and Twitter proved anything it's that these platforms are not invincible because of their size. If they deviate too much from their core business model (or what drew people there in the first place) they will collapse into a shell of their former selves.
I hope this would mean that video content creation would at last become less centralized than it is now. I would love to see smaller and more specialized/topical alternative video sharing websites appear. Or the return of people hosting their own websites and blogs to post their content.
Do we have any information as to how this is going so far?

As much as I doubt the boycott would even work given how massive YouTube is, I don’t wanna discourage people either, if you wanna watch videos here’s a Bluesky post by DanielTG giving you alternatives
