Response to: 90's cgi on modern 3d programs Posted January 17th, 2026 in Art

Phong shading is a technology that fakes specular detail by taking the geometry information and smoothing is out into a fake specular reflection.
normally this method works decently, but it isn't accurate to how actual specular detail works.

It honestly perplexes me that Blender doesn't really have an out-of-the-box... thing that allows using Phong shading or even vertex shading in the program itself, and that I have to supposedly use something like Godot just to achieve that effect. I mean, I like Godot, but can't I just do the damn thing in Blender itself?

Really. Blender. Powerful, multi-hypenated Blender. Award-winning, realism-capturing, Used-in-Spider-Verse Blender. Capable of doing any style in the art spectrum. Incapable of doing old tech shit from the 1990's, or at least I have to wrangle a dozen nodes just to get a similar effect. Why not the real thing?

Response to: Working on a logo for my cartoon character. What do y'all think? Posted January 17th, 2026 in Art

I'm a huge fan of how fun the logo looks!!!!! If that's your intent, I'd say you did a pretty good job.

The one thing I'd change is to make the letter strokes a lot more consistent. As it stands, the widths of the strokes vary a lot which can kind of screw with legibility.

Here's my shot at tweaking the logo in MS Paint:

iu_1526357_6708626.webp

Most I did was just made the U in Cub smaller and thicker, among other strokes. I also just tweaked the kerning (space between letters) to be a little tighter!!!

The idea for the logo is good. It should be a bit more consistent and thighter, in my opinion.

I fieddeled around a bit and this was the tweaked version I came up with.

This is frankly terrible. The black outlines end up making the logo look a lot more visually noisy in comparison to the original. Spaces between specific strokes of characters have been reduced (like the space between the lowercase e's) making it less legible. For whatever reason you also just decided to distort the characters' shapes.

I personally like to restrict the outlines to the outside edges of the logo only, and fill up any inside spots with the color of the outline.

It's very busy and will not read well on smaller print or screens, which removes your ability to use it on anything like a business card or as a watermark. Details like the character's face in the letter 'I' and the tooth(?) on the letter 'U' are already hard to see clearly on the screenshots you provided. [...]

I think the little details are kind of the point. The guy pretty clearly said the logo was made "as a middle finger to the corporate minimalism going on in most media nowadays". It kind of harkens back to a time when logos had a lot more detail going into them and weren't designed to work as an app icon and whatever.

iu_1526360_6708626.webp

Understandably it doesn't work when put on a business card or something, but again, not really the intent anyway. If it were, they would've made a logo that was a lot more clear and sanitized.

Response to: Scripting VS Storyboarding comics Posted January 17th, 2026 in Art

My workflow has always been general story outline > script > storyboard/thumbnailing.

Maybe for some other people storyboarding first might work better; IIRC this is what the guys at Marvel did back in the early days. Famously known as the Marvel Method, usually some artist would receive a general story outline and make the art based on that outline, and then the writer would add in dialogue afterwards.

Wait, people don't do both?

This, honestly. I subscribe to the idea that you should do both scripts and thumbnailing at the same time for the best effect.

Although, as much as I am very particular about my layouts and whatnot, I always prioritize making a basic story outline, and then a script above all else.

It might've happened by accident, or the guy who scouted you got unscouted. Now those are just guesses so don't actually quote me on that one lol because I don't truly understand how the scouting/descouting system works.

Response to: What advice has significantly improved your works? Posted December 19th, 2025 in Art

References references references. Use lots of references. Google it, Pinterest it, whatever.

On that note, make sure to beat the living daylights out of anybody who tells you that using references is cheating.

You can add some "texture" to your artwork by putting a noise layer above everything else, setting it to Multiply, and changing its opacity to 10-30%. Alternatively, in lieu of a noise layer, you can just use a paper texture nabbed off Google.

Get used to gradients and soft brushes. They surprisingly do a LOT to boost the quality of an artwork. You can still use cel-shading, no doubt, but try to mix some very subtle gradients in (base color -> slightly darker base color), as opposed to just totally flat colors.

On the topic of cel-shading, something I like doing is blurring the edges of the shadow. This is something I picked up from Wind Waker.

3 Use bluish colors for shadows

This is mostly true for daylight lighting. In most other scenarios I recommend using warmer colors, or just colors more relative to the environment. I say this as someone who religiously picked purple as the shading color for most of my artworks early on when I first learned about using Multiply layers for shadows.

Skibidi toilet is fine, its kind of stupid mindless entertainment, it watches like a Micheal Bay movie most of the time.

Yeah, probably should've used a less strong word than dogshit. I did watch it back when it was still in its peak for curiosity sake and it was surprisingly just okay, though the constant powerscaling got pretty tiring.

I had and still have no qualms regarding children watching it. I spent a good portion of my life religiously watching ExplodingTNT, and other people were watching TF2 SFMs and Gmod videos that were maybe equally if not more nonsensical, which was why I gravitated towards calling the series "weird dumb kids' entertainment". I honestly kind of mean that in an affectionate way

Preach. My go-to advice for new animators is to get good at art first. Take a year off, don't use Flash, and just learn how to draw better and stuff. Learn colors, simple anatomy, how to draw humans or animals or whatever, because everything else will just follow. It'll look good and you'll feel good.

For the actual animating part, ease in and ease out is your best friend. Seriously. Half the time, if you're clever enough, you don't even need to in-between anything.

Response to: How do you feel about the score system on NG? Posted December 18th, 2025 in Art

I might be overthinking this, or even being a bit silly for bringing it up, but I am genuinely curious. Does the score really matter in the long run? I would like to hear what others think about it.

Personally no. This answer is part of a larger discussion on disassociating internet points with the quality of your work, but that's not something I have the energy to repeat. Just know that it doesn't really matter, just make stuff and try to get better at making stuff.

What I find interesting is that people are a lot more lenient when it comes to voting art, because most people just give everything a 5 and move on, something I'm admittedly guilty of. Which is pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing, aka those who base their self worth on numbers on their screen, and kind of useless for people actually looking for comments and critique, and if you're looking for the latter then you're better off actually talking to friends or in servers and whatnot.

Movies and games are a whole different story, for whatever reason people are a lot more precise with how they vote. Try hard enough and you'd usually get a 3. If you're lucky, maybe even a 4.

I personally commend NG for sticking with the star system in the age of only likes and dislikes (and sometimes only likes), but truth be told it's nothing to be worried about. I've had this opinion ever since I started, back when the most troublesome event in my life was having online beef with an autistic thirteen year old who liked Ben 10, and my opinion hasn't changed since.

EDIT: On the topic again of scores mattering "in the long run", I think we're all kind of scared we'd lose engagement/visibility because we have less stars on something, because social media platforms like to use STUPID FUCKING ALGORITHMS, and those STUPID FUCKING ALGORITHMS punish accounts whose posts don't get enough likes. Or even for not posting enough. Or, for INSTAGRAM's case, being midgetsausage.

Rest assured it doesn't matter on the technical side as well, because NG is not one to engage with STUPID FUCKING ALGORITHMS to begin with.

Oh, nobody actually looks at your work. Nobody's waiting for you to put something out, you're just playing to an empty audience, it's a waste of time (har har), yadda yadda... all the thoughts and anxieties that plague you and I. Maybe these thoughts are true. Maybe they're not.

But I don't know. I still keep going because damn, making shit is fun. Even if you know fully well that nobody's probably looking at it in the end (and I won't lie, being rewarded with indifference for your hard work is demotivating), it's still just fun to sit down and make something.

And sometimes, I think that's all that really matters.

I wonder if Nintendo will be brazen enough to start going after YouTube channels who built their whole audience from making Nintendo parodies. Stuff like 64-bits, TerminalMontage, or Mashed. I understand that their cartoons are technically fair use, seeing as they're made from scratch, but you never know when a multi-billion dollar media company might try to make an example out of someone.

I feel dense for asking that question now, since not too many months ago, I was completely burnt out on the social medias for a similar reason.

UnculturedMutt brought it up too, but back in the early-2010s, they sent out copyright infringements/strikes to anyone and everyone using footage of Nintendo games in their vid, and then tried to 'win' them back by setting up their own partner program so they can take a massive cut off of the money made from those videos. To no shock, it flopped hard, so they dropped the program and made it so they wouldn't copyright claim those videos for using footage (like literally every other developer).

To my knowledge though, with the exception of straight up porn/NSFW, I haven't seen any examples of Nintendo parodies getting taken down on YT or elsewhere, so they should be fine.
