Look guys look it's my greatest achievement!

In all honesty, as long as it can happen on the backend I could see the making of these visualizers as a really cool idea for a collab. Like a bunch of people come together and make little graphic loops that each last 10 seconds or so, maybe with a quick intro built into them for the startup of each loop.

Heyo everyone, this is a heads up that you have APPROXIMATELY (read: 13 minutes less than) 12 HOURS LEFT to submit an application to be considered for Tankmas! If you've been on the fence about it before now, give it a shot!

Also, because I saw a few more of these, as a reminder: DON'T WORK ON ANY ARTWORK FOR THE CALENDAR UNTIL WE CONFIRM TO YOU THAT YOU'RE IN!!! Submitting an application puts you in the running for a spot, but that doesn't mean you automatically get in! We have limited spaces available!

For the examples of your work on the application, you can do whatever best reflects you and what you can do. It's preferred to use recent stuff, but if you have older things that you think are better references, you can use those too.

It works similar to the presents, where the deadline roughly depends on when you want your music to go live (24 hours before it's set to go live). This means that you don't have to have it done before the calendar goes live if you're going later on, but you can if you'd like. If you're going earlier on the calendar, then you should aim to have it ready before the calendar launches.

You're not required to do other tasks, and if you just want to do the one background song, you can do that. If you're open to other music things for minigames and such, you're also welcome to go for that in addition to the background song!

To everyone who applied - THANK YOU for doing so! Shmoods and I are going to go through now and look at everyone's application. Once you hear from either one of us saying you got in (which should be within 24 hours from now, if all goes well!), then you'll get further instructions with making something for the collab. If you don't make it in, it's not because we don't like you or what you applied with - space is somewhat limited, but we're excited to see what you all do beyond Pico Cross as well! Shmoods and I can't wait for you all to see the finished collab, so stay tuned hehe

1. It's highly encouraged to use Newgrounds characters in your art piece, but it doesn't have to specifically be Tankman! It could be any other character that started its life on Newgrounds - Boyfriend, Salad Fingers, ENA, NOX, etc.

2. DON'T WORK ON A PIECE UNTIL WE LET YOU KNOW IF YOU'RE IN! We have limited space, so we aren't able to fit in everyone who applies. With the examples question, that's for you to submit things you've already done as examples of your style.

Basically, every artist chooses a day they want their piece to show up (say, December 8th). They draw their piece for that day in advance, and then once the day they chose comes around, their piece shows up as a gift that people can open in game. That means that if you're chosen as a present artist, you only have to do one art piece, and not 32.

WE'RE BACK IN HOLIDAY BUSINESS!!

It's a pleasure to be able to bring back Tankmas with the help of two incredible colleagues in holiday hijinks: seasoned Tankmas veteran (and incredible artist!) @MrShmoods , and the legendary NG game developer @Squidly . The three of us are excited to organize things this year, and it's not just because of what we're offering - we're excited to see what YOU want to offer, too!

Tankmas? Is that some kind of joke?

Nope, this isn't some kind of cock joke - Tankmas is the non-denominational Newgrounds holiday tradition where people from across the site can log in every day throughout the month of December (plus January 1st, because why leave New Year's out of things?) and be treated to a new piece of art wrapped in a nice little gift box.

(Pro Tip: logging in during December of any year still earns you the present medals! - for example, if you open 2018's December 1st present on this year's December 1st, you'll still receive the medal!)

So do you need only artists or...?

See, that's the cool thing about Tankmas - it involves every portal across Newgrounds!

• Art - One of, if not the, biggest pulls for Tankmas is the daily art, which is created for Newgrounds, by Newgrounders like you! All styles and mediums are welcome - in the past, art pieces included pixel art, hand-drawn pieces, a couple of GIFs here and there, and someone even did a piece using a custom 3D tank model! If you’re not into making full pieces, and let’s say you want to make comics instead - Tankmas also did comics in the past, and we’d love to have them again this year, whether it’s a comic you read at your own pace or a comic with voice acting and music involved!
• Audio - Another major (heh) joy of Tankmas is the music made by musicians across the site. All styles are welcome, from rock to classic, general listening to upbeat jingles, anyone with a taste for holiday and/or winter-esque music is welcome! Voice actors - there’s opportunities involved with the smaller projects of Tankmas as well.
• Movies - Since 2020, Tankmas has premiered NEW movies in the month of December. They didn’t have to specifically be holiday movies, either - previously premiered have included Duncan & Jones 3, Pengu’s Christmas Special, Mean Girls, and Luckyboy. We already have a few premieres lined up for you!
• Games - also beginning in 2020, HaxeFlixel game developers created minigames that were playable within Tankmas, such as 2020’s Festive Forage, Think Positive, and our favorite pastime of pinning the tail on NickConter; 2021’s Oh Crap A Yeti; 2022’s Holiday Hominid Drop (returning from 2020!) and Yule Duel. Most have medals and scoreboards attached - and if you’re not convinced things can get competitive, ask a veteran about the competition for the highest scores on Festive Forage! (“my thumb hurted. ouch.” -shmoods)

Cool! So I can do literally anything for this?

WRONG!!!! You are able to do mostly anything, as long as it follows these general guidelines.

• NO A-RATED SUBMISSIONS! All content for the calendar must be rated E-M only. Porno Claus will NOT be visiting this year!
• If you're accepted, DO NOT use your old artwork for your Advent submission. This isn’t a calendar to show your earlier work; this is a catalyst to make new, incredible pieces!
• Game developers must use HaxeFlixel for your minigames. This is mainly due to engine limitations at the time of writing.

Wanna do more? Help each other out! Reach out to others involved with Tankmas for help on your project, or vice versa! - for example, you could grab a musician and voice actor to help make a comic read like a storybook, or you could gather a game developer and artist to help create a minigame, or even grab a musician, some voice actors, and an artist to create an animated short.

It’ll give us an idea of what you want to do for Tankmas and allow us to see/hear/inhale what you can do, and we’ll enjoy it like the best gingerbread Smarties you can find- I mean, please make sure to fill out the form by Monday, November 11 @ 11:59 PM EDT to be considered! We do have limited slots, so while we can’t accept everyone to the project we value what everyone’s bringing to the table for this year.

If you want to propose a game or animation after the November 11th deadline; privately reach out to Shmoods, Squidly or I and we’ll talk further about the possibility of putting it in Tankmas. We’ve got an especially tight cap on the premieres, so no guarantees!

I hope we haven’t answered it yet! Pop any questions you got for us in this thread, then Shmoods, Squidly and myself will be happy to answer the best we can, but we can’t answer everything! Don’t wanna ruin any surprises (don’t even get me STARTED with what happened to the person that yapped about the killer candy canes from outer space).

HAPPY PICO CROSS 2024 OPEN CALL DAY!

Wait... what's Pico Cross???

Pico Cross is a nonogram-style puzzle where you have to make an image by filling in boxes in a grid and leaving others empty. When you complete a row or column, not only do you get closer to solving the image, but you also get some cool art in each filled-in box in every filled-in column/row! If you want to see what I'm talking about, you can check out the previous Pico Cross collabs here and here.

What's so special about this year?

This year, because the collab is planned to release around the holidays, the theme is holiday-related. That means that the artwork will be related to the holidays, and the general aesthetic (and did someone say "story"?) will match the theme as well. Oh, and did I mention that [REDACTED] [CLASSIFIED] and it will [SENSITIVE] [PERSONAL], plus @MrShmoods [BLOCKED] [CONTROVERSAL] for this year? It'll be fun!

Great! What can I do?

What we're looking for is within three specific fields:

• Animation. I'm looking for a small team to help with some animated segments for this year's collab, but FYI there aren't too many of these segments and each one isn't too long.
• Voice Acting. While there are extremely limited spots for this, we are in need of voice actors for specific characters. Feminine- and masculine-esque characters are available!
• Art. Pico Cross features a lot of art, from the artwork of different NG characters in filled boxes to the stills used as cutscenes to the pieces of UI needed. There's plenty of space for artists, and if the Treasure Hunt has taught me anything, I know there's plenty of talented artists here on NG!

If you wanna help out, pop a few of your works here in this thread (please put a few and not just one)! It's required that you must be scouted first before applying.

If you're accepted, the goal is to get all of the art and animations done by November 28.

That's fair! Like I said, I just wanted to possibly toss an idea out lol. Either way, I'm looking forward to the update on the credits and on other things soon!

One thing I think would actually be interesting in terms of the multi-author thing actually is if they were separated or sorted by general category, and then if the expanding idea becomes a thing, then you could expand out by category.

For example, with something like the Dreamcast collab, you could have the credits categorized by Animation, Art, Music, Voice Acting, and Organizing. That way, if people want to know, for instance, who a specific animator is, or they're looking for the NG profile of a specific Voice Actor, they can expand out that category. Or, you can have people expand out the whole credits section and just peruse the whole lineup!

I also don't think this should be a part of every multi-author project, especially if it's only two to seven people. But if you hit a minimum of X people - say, 10 - credited on a project, then the categories would sort everyone out. Especially on massive projects like these collabs or things like Tankmas, categories on credits might help a bit, but that's the idea I'm tossing out lol

Gonna propel this forward a bit on the musician side of things

So with some of the shanties, we looked through and there were some copyright issues involved with a few of them (as in, we couldn't find versions that were free of copyright). While we aren't able to do covers of them, the thinking is that musicians can offer to make original shanties that can have a similar vibe/subject as them, and for anyone who wants to write lyrics or anyone looking to sing in them, they can tag along as well!

The songs and people I'm pinging here are for those songs that had these issues so that people can swap to others if they want.

Currently there's two originals in the works, one that @Thetagist is composing and writing (from the look of it I assume it is branching from The Flying Dutchman, if Thetagist wants to confirm or deny that) and one that I'm composing (looking for a writer!) that's branching from Daughter of the Sea. Both of us are looking for VAs who want to sing for those, so those are potential options for you all!

I called this post "The Fall of Newgrounds" because I didn't think as many people would click on "Fall Happenings."

Honestly, I love the CD iconography more than I do the traditional square/round icons that I see in a lot of places. I think it'd be good to offer a choice, maybe make it a Supporter feature, but I personally don't want the CD icon to go away since it gives each audio selection a kind of charm that other places don't give their icons, y'know?

I think an idea that I have off the top of my head is competitions where you'd have to be a supporter to participate. That way it could help raise the number of people that become Supporters while keeping the amount of people joining relatively low, encourage people to be creative and have fun, not infringe upon current offerings (which I understand is a bit of a minefield, knowing what people are okay with putting behind paywalls and what they aren't), and it's a competition so activity on the site could be boosted and probably even encourage more people to become supporters or join in!

Off the top of my head it's not a perfect solution but it might be something that someone could experiment with in the future. Knowing that previous competitions in recent years have brought more participants, I think people would be good with a new kind of competition that can encourage people to become supporters without triggering the masses that aren't supporters.

You'll see one more log show up sometime tomorrow (apologies for radio silence on my end, as I've been fighting allergies and a few things IRL!), but keep an eye out as results will be posted once we're ready on our end. Any entries that were not replaced or do not qualify as per the rules are out of the running!
